Martin Wild speaks to Marc Tierney after the 3-3 draw with MK Dons

Defender Marc Tierney was all smiles after a stoppage time equaliser from James Constable rescued an unlikely point for Town in a comeback of Herculean proportions.

Dons scored three times in eight first half minutes and it looked like the Shrews were in for a hiding. If ever there was a game of two halves, then tonight's game was it.

"The first half was amazing. Every shot they hit went in," said Tierney. "It was going in off the posts, bouncing back off the keeper. We didn't know it was going to be frosty in that goalmouth and I'm not just using that as an excuse. We were right off the pace, I mean 3-0 down at home and you're thinking 'what's going on?' You're trying to gee each other up and get each other rallied. It needed half-time to get us to regroup and hang on to that goal we got. It gave us a lifeline and we showed a lot of character to get in amongst the best team in the league probably. We've shown we can play football. We were three-nil down and responded with three of our own."

The front three for the visitors (Gallen, Wright & Johnson) were all outstanding first half and the left-back recognised they were arguably the best he'd faced all season.

"Their movement's good, they've got midfield runners and they obviously know what they're doing - they do their jobs well. We have to hold our hands up and admit that our first half performance wasn't good enough, but in the second we showed our prowess in front of goal and showed that we have a lot about us.

"We scored at such an important time. It was Kelvin's first goal of the season and I'm so pleased for him, especially with taking Ben Davies' armband as captain when he had to go off. It was still a tough task at 3-1, they tried to keep the ball but we just got about them. That goal though right on half-time made us realise that we could break them down. They might be the best team in the league but we've seen some of the sides that have taken points off them. Even though they're a good side, they have flaws in them and we managed to find them.

"It's a case of better late than never but we need to start games like that attacking teams from the off. The gaffer gave us two options at half-time. We could either wither out there or take the game to them and show a bit of pride. We were at home 3-1 down, the fans had come to see us put on a show and it makes you sick to the stomach when you're getting beat like that. We showed a load of character - I keep using that word, character - it shows we have a real team here and a real ethic. We can get about teams, even the best teams, and get something from the games. When we come up against teams who aren't as good as the MK Dons are, we must start to take the games to them as well."

The temperatures were plummeting as the game wore on with conditions underfoot difficult for both sets of players.

"The groundstaff have done a brilliant job here, the pitch is one of the best in the league, but that one frosty goalmouth was really hard in the first half. It was probably our fault because we chose to defend that half at that end. The ball was bouncing up and around Glyn and we're trying to clear it but you're just scuffing things. It was hard but there's no time for excuses now. We're coming into the business end of the season. We need to start getting results. It was good to get a point from that game and that should give us the impetus to push on and get as many points as we can before the end of the season. When we go hell for leather at teams and not show them too much respect we tend to do a lot better than if we stand off like we did to them tonight. I think maybe we did show them too much respect.

"You said it yourself, it was definitely a game of two halves, it was quite unbelievable really. It's the same set of players second half that contested the first and the turnaround was amazing but we still need to turn draws into wins."

Gary Peters said in his post-match interview that the point felt as good as any victory the side had earned this season, such was the enormity of the task facing his shell-shocked side after Don's Mark Wright scored to make it 3-0. Tierney agreed.

"You've got to take into account that against such a good side, and especially having given them a three-goal start, that we've proved we can match them and that is really encouraging. We weren't at the races in the first half and we could hear the fans displeasure and they've every right. If I'd turned up as a fan and watched my side go three down I'd have done the same. They love the club so much and it's just frustration. We're sat in the dressing room trying to psyche ourselves up but it's no use doing it exclusively in there, you need to take it out on the pitch with you and we've done that second half. No one sees what goes on in the dressing room or on the training ground most of the time so we need to do our talking out on the pitch. That's why I believe the fans got right behind us second half and allowed us to play right at the top of our game. They're all delighted at the end of the game 'cos we've done it for them and showed we can mix it against a really good team."
