Youngster Signs Contract
Steve Leslie has signed a new one year deal with the club which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2008/09 season.
Steve came through Town's youth system and signed his first pro contract with the club last season. He made a number of first team appearances and did enough to earn a new contract for this season.
So far he's made 11 appearances for the side and put in some decent performances but again hasn't done quite enough to hold down a regular first team place.
He has done enough though over the season in the first team, reserves and training to show his potential to Town boss Gary Peters who is happy to give Steve another year: "Steve is going to sign a contract for another season.
"We feel Steve has still got a lot of potential and at times shows unbelievable ability.
"He's just go to learn to show that in the first team and the more chances he gets in the first team the more he will get used to it and the more he gets used to it then the more he will thrive.
"In the reserves he is superb and in training he is great and gives us all sorts of problems when we play against him in training and we need him to give the opposition those problems now.
"He's shown in spells what he can do in the first team but now we've got to get him doing it consistently."
Steve has shown glimpses of what he is capable of in the first team and the challenge now is to reproduce that week in week out:"We've given him a few games and in the first couple of games he was alright but didn't do so well in the last one. There were games last season and this where he hasn't done as well as we would have liked but that is all part of the learning process.
"We've got to keep giving him experience and then seeing if he can thrive on it.
"Steve is still a young lad and is in a similar position to Chris Humphrey, we sent Chris out on loan and that gave him the confidence and we've started to feed him into the first team.
"We needed to get Steve signed up and now need to look at all the opportunities we have which might included playing in our first team."
Giving Steve a new contract will help take the pressure of uncertainty off his shoulders. GP hopes that this will help him to make that step up and become a first team regular: "You don't want him to be going out on the pitch and thinking that he has to prove himself to earn another contract.
"He's got enough on his plate as a young lad coping with first team football without having to think that he's got to play well because if he doesn't he won't get a contact.
"We've not taken that pressure off him and the next thing we need to do is stick him out there and see what he can do."
