Glyn Garner

Martin Wild speaks to Glyn Garner after the 0-0 draw with Notts County

Town stopper Glyn Garner was a virtual spectator this afternoon as a resolute Notts County defence ensured a goalless draw at Oteley Road - the second successive home game that has resulted in a scoreless encounter.

"We had chances second half; there was a much better tempo to our game. It's just disappointing that we haven't stuck one away. We tend not to look at statistics as players generally, but as you've reminded me that it's one win in seventeen now…how many of those seventeen have we drawn? If we weren't going at teams or creating chances you'd be disappointed but we are, so things are going in the right direction. We just need a ruthless streak to be able to finish teams off.

"Like the gaffer says you've got to stick your chances away. But fair play to them, their keeper's played well. At the moment we've become a hard luck story but I'm a big believer that you make your own luck, and we just need to start putting the ball into the back of the net to turn draws into wins."

A Bank Holiday crowd of 5, 673 once more braved the elements to back their struggling heroes, and the potential for the club with loyal support like that isn't lost on the Shrews number one.

"The crowd get behind the team but it's up to us to entertain them. Once we start knocking the ball about and getting crosses into the front men and balls into the box, they're on the edge of their seats and that's what they want to come and watch. So hopefully that's what we'll give them for the rest of this season and into next."

I asked about Garner's first impressions of recent loan-signing Graeme Lee, who caught the eye today with a no-nonsense display of defending.

"He's been great and I'm enjoying playing with him. He's got a cool head and he's comfortable on the ball so that can make a difference as well. He helps a lot of people around him as well with his talking, because our back line is made up of really young players."

Games have been arriving thick and fast and with fixtures against Macclesfield, Dagenham & now Notts County yielding only two points, did the points return disappoint the Welshman?

"Well it helps if we can keep the ball out of our net and start to put the ball into the opposition's. I mean we were 1-0 up at Macclesfield and had further chances to go on and win the game, but then they score two worldies and we end up losing. Saturday was the same again where we were winning and couldn't kill them off. Let's not be happy with one-nil, let's go for two, three, four. Then if you do concede, you're defending a 2-1 rather than a 1-1. We need to find a killer touch from somewhere. Let's put the game to bed and then we can do our fancy dan stuff."

Russell Hoult pulled off a magnificent stoppage time save to deny Steve Leslie and Town a much needed winner. The only thing missing from today's performance - particularly in the second half - was a goal that the attacking display deserved. Perhaps things tend not to go for you when you're down at the bottom and especially when the run is as damaging as the current one.

"Through working hard and communicating with each other, and doing the right things on the training ground, which we've been doing in the last few weeks, it's only a matter of time before things change," said Garner. "I think you're right though, luck doesn't go with you when you're down there for whatever reason. Teams at the top anticipate things and make the most of their chances so it isn't always about luck, but like I said earlier, you have to make your own luck in this game anyway.

"We want to finish with as many points as possible so we can build a momentum to take with us into next season. We are generally quite solid but it's just a case of stepping up another level which I know we are capable of. If we were down at the bottom of the league and shots were flying past you left, right and centre you'd be genuinely concerned but they're not. We just have to show better awareness, a greater initiative and start to look for that killer touch to finish teams off."

With eight of the bottom nine facing each other this afternoon, there has been significant change in the positions though Mansfield and Wrexham continue to look like the teams in most trouble.

"I think we've dropped a place but we've moved further away from the bottom two so that's the most important thing for us. Everything's bright and sharp - we're working hard in training, so it's all good at the moment to be honest."

Bury are next up at Oteley. Whether it be luck, awareness or initiative that's missing, that elusive win is certainly a long time in coming. Twelve winless games now for Salop, let's hope it's lucky thirteen on Saturday.
