Season Review - December
Martin Wild continues his look back at Town's eventful 2007/08 season.
December
Midfielder Ben Davies had made a cameo appearance during the defeat at Millmoor following his lengthy spell on the sidelines, and was rewarded with a start against Ian Brightwell's Macclesfield Town. Another home clean sheet yielded another three points thanks to strikes from Drummond and Hunt. The game had been brought forward from the scheduled Tuesday night slot as both teams had gone out in the first round of the FA Cup.
Town's miserable away run continued when they went down at Notts County despite Hibbert's penalty giving them a first-half lead. Davies then scored twice in the biggest home win of the season against Dagenham. The scores were level after 55 minutes but the visitors being reduced to ten men opened the floodgates and Shrews won 4-0.
The game at Accrington the week before Christmas was almost called off. Heavy rain had left the pitch saturated but there was further concern as some icy patches gave the referee a decision to make. When Mullins headed Accrington ahead, Peters must have wished he'd erred on the side of caution, but Town came from behind to win for the only time in the campaign. Quickfire strikes from Davies and Hibbert set everyone up for the Boxing Day clash at home to Stockport in a game that would see the best crowd of the season at home.
7,707 passed through the turnstiles and witnessed Salop's fourth win in five games. The returning Andy Cooke put them ahead but after being pegged back with under 20 minutes left, Davies and a Hibbert pen sent the majority of the crowd away happy.
To say the wheels of our season came off from this point onwards would be the mother of all understatements. Sitting in ninth place we were handily placed for a tilt at the play-offs. Few could have predicted what lay ahead.
A home defeat to Wycombe three days after the win against Stockport was the first of four straight losses for Peters' side and it began to spark serious unrest amongst Town fans. Peters himself was scathing of the performance against Wanderers, saying his players were shocking; especially in the opening period. It was a disappointing end to the year.
