Shane Sherriff's move from Tranmere Rovers to Town was confirmed at the weekend and this morning he joined up with his new teammates.

The 25 year old left sided player has played over 100 games in the English league as well as 3 full seasons in the Danish Premier League. He had ended his contract at Tranmere and despite the offer of a new one he chose to join up with Town.

ShrewsWeb grabbed a quick word with Shane during a break in training at Sundorne and started by asking how the move came around: "I received a call from Paul Simpson, which I wasn't expecting, and he brought me down to show me around and told what the chairman wants to do and where the boys are heading.

"At first I was a little bit sceptical of dropping down the league but once I understood where the club is heading I couldn't say so no.

"In ways the decision was and wasn't a tough one to make, I was comfortable at Tranmere had two good years and had settled down with the family there and it would have been easy to stay there but I wanted a new challenge."

Paul Simpson took Shane on loan from Leeds United, where he had progressed through the youth ranks, and gave him his first taste of League Football. Simmo has kept tabs on Shane's development over the years and the Town manager was one of the reasons he chose to come to Town: "Paul Simpson is a man I respect a lot and I think the other boys do and that was part of the decision to move here.

"He's a good manager who has a lot of experience and I think he will take the club forward."

When talking to ShrewsWeb about signing Shane Paul Simpson revealed that he could play in at number of places on the left. Shane can slot into a number of positions but he is looking at a place in the centre of defence: "It's a tough question to answer but at left sided centre back and left-back I'm comfortable at both.

"I played left midfield and left wing last year and those are position I can fill in but I don't see that as a favoured role for me."

The move to Town now sees Shane begin the next challenge of his career and one that he is looking forward to. He has been impressed with the squad and thinks it is one that can help take the club forward: "I think it's important for footballers to challenge themselves, they want to win trophies and achieve.

"The biggest part of my decision to come here was the possible challenge of helping take the club forward.

"I think we have the squad that can do that and see the club challenging this season."

It is early days in Shane's Shrewsbury Town career but the early signs after half a day's training are good: "All the boys have been great and have really welcomed me into the squad straight away which is great.

"It's early days yet to say whether it's good training wise but it's been a good morning so far."
