Walker In
Town's attacking options have been boosted with the addition of Richard Walker on a season long loan from Bristol Rovers.
The news brings to end weeks of discussions between Town manager Paul Simpson, Richard Walker and Bristol Rovers with the exciting forward finalising the paper work on his move this morning.
Simmo broke the news to ShrewsWeb this morning and was excited with the addition to his squad: "We've been working over the last couple of weeks to bring in another striker and I'm pleased that we finally agreed a deal for Richard Walker to join us on a season long loan.
"I'm really looking forward to getting him involved and working with the rest of the players and hopefully showing the goal scoring form that I think he can show.
"He's not the quickest forward but he is fantastic at getting balls rolled into his feet around the box and twisting and turning. He has an eye for a goal and gets himself into good goal scoring positions and he's that type of player you need to have."
The addition of Walker now gives Simpson a lot of options in his forward line. The Town manager is pleased with the attacking options at his disposal and thinks this will help over the forthcoming season: "I know it might seem that we have a glut of strikers at the moment but I think that to be successful you need strikers to call upon because they are not going to score all season.
"In the strikers that we have at the club now I am really pleased with what I've seen and hopefully I can keep the ones that I want together.
"I want to get a strong squad as it's not just about 11 players; it's about having a strong squad throughout the season.
"Steve Leslie has come back as fit as I've seen anybody, Chrisy Humphrey has bulked up a little bit and come back strong.
"We've got the strikers who are keen to impress and at this moment in time I don't have a definite starting 11. I have an idea of how I want to play and a vision on who will slot into those places but whoever impresses me in pre-season has a chance of playing and that is the beauty of having a strong squad with ability."
With Grant Holt and Richard Walker added to the Town forward line the talk amongst the Town fans has been about these two players. Simmo was quick to remind fans about the other options at his disposal for the forthcoming season: "Everybody is going to be talking about Grant Holt and Richard Walker and they are all forgetting that Dave Hibbert was our leading goal scorer last season.
"Dave Hibbert has a big part to play this season and I don't want the players looking at the new signings and thinking that is the end of me because it doesn't necessarily mean that.
"I want players here who are good for this team and for this football club, I can't just go with 11 players I need a squad who can keep up a sustained challenge for the whole of the season. There are 46 league games to play, I want to be involved in all cup competitions and we could end up with 50 or more games this season if things go as I want them to."
One player who looks like he maybe on his way out of the club is strike Guy Madjo who is currently away on trial. The striker has been with the Cameroon Olympic squad but is now looking at a move to Holland: "Guy Madjo is currently on trial in Holland looking to get himself a move away from the club.
"He played for Go Ahead Eagles and did well in a practice game and he maybe going out on a season long loan."
