Town win Performance of the Week
F&C INVESTMENTS PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARD
HOME WIN AT PROSTAR STADIUM EARNS THE SHREWS THE AWARD
The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week, the F&C Investments Performance of the Week Award should go to Shrewsbury Town F.C. following their excellent 7-0 home win against Gillingham, in the Coca-Cola League Two game on Saturday 13th September 2008.
Michael Jackson got Town on their way as he headed the opener from a corner and Dave Hibbert's shot deflected in for the second. Ben Davies curled a free-kick for the third and a header from Graham Coughlan made it four. After the break Shane Cansdell-Sherriff sidefooted a fifth before a Grant Holt penalty made it six and Davies fired in another superb free-kick for the seventh.
Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson was delighted with the result after his side bounced back from their away defeat to Morecambe: "We asked for a reaction after the Morecambe defeat and we've had it in training all week, sometimes worry when you get that reaction in training because you sometimes don't get that in the game - but it has happened and I'm delighted.
"We could have had more goals than the seven but that may have been a little greedy. It's still only three points on the board but I am really chuffed as it was a really good team effort."
"I'm delighted to pick up the award on behalf of everyone connected with the club who has helped this happen.
"It is a small reward for all the hard work that everyone has put in but is hopefully the first of many awards this season."
Manager Paul Simpson is pictured receiving the specially engraved crystal football this afternoon. He was has also done an interview which will be screened on Sky Soccer Saturday on this Saturday.
