Simmo Update
Saturday saw Town lose their unbeaten home record in a controversial way with Port Vale scoring a winner late into injury time. The incident where Vale grabbed a second goal saw Town keeper Luke Daniels lead from the pitch with a face injury after he was clattered by Vale striker Marc Richards. Earlier in the game there was another incident which saw Dave Hibbert receive lengthy treatment after a blow to the face.
ShrewsWeb caught up with Simmo this morning and started by getting an update on Daniels and Hibbert: "Luke Daniels and Dave Hibbert have both been in the hospital after the game on Saturday and taken care of by the staff there.
"Luke has had around 15 stitches in his mouth, he had a nasty gash on the top lip that cut right through, he had a flap of skin on his gums and another cut inside his mouth where he took a blow.
"Dave Hibbert had about 5 or 6 stitches in his lip where he had a cut all across his lip.
"They are both doing ok but are also slightly deformed and slightly sore but I'm expecting they will be ok over the week and available for the weekend game.
"Hibbo will join in training today but we will have to be careful with him and so that he doesn't get another bang on it.
"Luke will miss out the first part of the week's training, during the collision he took a whack to the thigh and has a really bad dead leg. I think the likelihood is that the dead leg will keep him out of training longer than the bang to his face."
A lot of people thought that Richards goal should never have stood, his first touch had taken the ball back towards Daniels but the Vale striker slid in and caught the Town man, the ball then rebounded up and rolled into the empty Town net. On Saturday Simmo was convinced that the goal should never have stood and after a weekend of reviewing the incident he still believes this: "I've looked at it many times over the weekend and I find it hard that anyone could look at it and see that it is not a free kick. I'm not for one minute saying that Richards has been malicious in his challenge and there was no intent to hurt Luke Daniels but it was a foul.
"Whichever way you look at it and no matter how many times you look at it it is a free-kick but for whatever reason the ref has decided to not give it.
"The other major decision in the game where Mike Jackson had a goal ruled out for offside I think the ref has got that right on that one."
Sean Thornton played the last game of his month's loan period on Saturday but talks were still on going to extend this. Orient manager Martin Ling had spoken in the press that Town would have to contribute more to Thornton's wages but it looks like Town will now be able to afford that: "At this moment in time it looks like Sean Thornton has played his last game of the season for us.
"He's had a good month for us and I've been pleased with his contribution to the side but unfortunately we are in a situation where we can't afford to take him any longer.
"I'm going to continue to speak with Orient to see whether we can do something but it looks to me that it is finished.
"Marc Pugh has come back to us so that is another body that back in the squad.
"We will look to see how it is over the week as to whether Sean comes back, whether we look to bring someone else in or whether we go with what we've got."
Thornton had come in as cover while Paul Murray recovered from his Achilles problem and there is some good news for Murray. The midfielders rehab has gone well and he joined in with training on Friday. There was no reaction and he has now returned to full training and will now be looking to build up his match fitness: "Paul Murray is getting there and he's done really well with his rehab over the last couple of weeks working with Nathan.
"He joined in training last Friday with the rest of the squad and as of today he will start back full training with us.
"We will have to ease him in to make sure there are no setbacks and I don't want to rush it but the early signs are good."
