David Hibbert

Posted on: Fri 17 Oct 2008

Dave Hibbert is enjoying his football with Town at the moment after his decent start to the season. He's built on last season which saw his first full season of league football and is looking to keep improving this season.

Hibbo took another knock against Port Vale which left him needing a trip to hospital and a number of stitches in his face. He's been back in training all week and looks to have no ill effects ahead of the weekend's game: "I'm feeling fine, had a few stitches at the weekend but feel ok now.

"Getting knocks and kicks is part and parcel of the game and something you have to get on with.

"I seem to be getting a few this season with a broken nose, stitches, concussion, you name it I've had it."

The addition of Grant Holt and Richard Walker over the summer saw a lot more competition in the Town forward line. Some thought Hibbo wouldn't feature much but so far he's played 12 games and scored 3 goals. He loves working with two such experienced strikers as Holt and Walks and the chance he has to learn from them: "I always believe that as long as you work hard then you will get your rewards, that is what I do in training and what I do in games.

"I know I have a lot to work on and improve on but the manager seems to be giving me the opportunity at the moment and hopefully I am improving.

"It's all about learning, and to play with progressing and improving my game and with two great strikers like Grant Holt and Richard Walker can only benefit me.

"They've proved themselves in the league and are always helping and encouraging me and it's helping a lot."

Last season saw Hibbo top the Town scoring charts with 12 goals and he's hoping to improve on that tally. His last was a superb effort against Gillingham and he will be looking to add to that tomorrow against Bournemouth: "I got 12 goals last year and that wasn't bad considering the season that we had.

"I want to kick on and score more this season but haven't scored since the Gillingham game but hopefully if I get an opportunity tomorrow I'll notch."

This season sees a stronger more experienced looking Shrewsbury Town side. Paul Simpson strengthened over the summer and this has really helped turn Town into contenders: "Last year we had a good team and the gaffer has brought in some good experienced players and that has really helped us.

"We've tightened up at the back and aren't conceding many goals and that really helps the team's confidence.

"Last week against Port Vale we were a little unfortunate to lose and if felt we deserved at least a point.

"Last time we won a game we bounced back from that and won by seven goals so we've got to take heart from that and do it again."

With 10 League games gone Town are sitting nicely in the play-off positions in League 2. It's a good position but one that Hibbo and the other players are keen to improve on: "We know we can do better and we want to be up top of the league and not in 4th or 5th

"If we play as we know that we can then there is no reason why we won't be right up there."

Tomorrow sees Bournemouth visit the Prostar Stadium and it gives Town a chance to bounce back from the disappointment against Port Vale. Bournemouth maybe second from bottom but their recent form suggests that the game will be another tough test: "They started on -17 points but their league position doesn't reflect the season they are having.

"They've had a good little run and only lost something like 1 game in the last 6 so we know it will be a tough game.

"I'm sure if the fans get behind us like they have been doing so then wit will be fine."
