Matt Gilks

Posted on: Fri 21 Nov 2008

ShrewsWeb broke the news this morning that Matt Gilks would be joining on a month's loan.

The 26 year old stopper has come in to bolster the goalkeeping options with Luke Daniels looking to be out for another 3 weeks.

ShrewsWeb grabbed a quick word with Matt before he joined his new team mates for training and asked how the move came about: "I signed for Blackpool in the summer and my chances have been limited there so far. I spoke to the manager a few weeks ago and he said I could go on loan.

"I've had a few enquiries from clubs but then Shrewsbury came in and the deals come off and I'm glad to be here."

Matt joins a new side but one where he already has several connections at. He played under Simmo at Rochdale and also played alongside Grant Holt during his time at Spotland: "I played nearly 200 games at Rochdale and then moved to Norwich and had a great year there even though I didn't get a game.

"For an old manager to come back in for you shows that I must have done something right the first time we worked together.

"If you stay on good terms with people when they leave then that can help, I speak to a few of the lads here and know there's a good bunch at the club.

"Holty is a good player but also the biggest moaner in football, I've kept in touch with him over the years and know what he can offer as a player."

The loan is an initial month at present but Matt is hoping that it goes well and he gets some first team football. If that happens then he would be happy to review the situation again and see where it goes from there: "I want to see this month out and get a few games under my belt and help the team to get a few wins.

"After that we will have to see what happens but to go back to Blackpool and sit in the stands or the bench isn't what I'm looking to do.

"Who knows what will happen but if it goes well then hopefully we can extend it further."

During his time with Rochdale Matt played against Town a number of times so knows a little about the club. The Shrewsbury Town is one that is a different proposition to the one he knows from his visits to the Gay Meadow: "The new stadium looks excellent; the old Gay Meadow was a game that you wanted to play early season so the pitch was ok.

"Football clubs are moving on in general and this one no exception.

"The new stadium has given the club a boost and hopefully it will continue up the leagues to be where they want to be."

It was then off to training to join his new team mates as they prepare for the trip to Sincil Bank on Saturday. He's hoping for the chance to get some first team football during his time at the Prostar and fans can expect a loud voice in the goal is he does get the chance: "Footballers tend to get on wherever you go, I've travelled in with a couple of the lads this morning and to get to know the rest won't be a problem.

"I'm a very vocal player and don't stop shouting all game, hopefully I am a commanding keeper who gives a lot of reassurance to the back four.

"If I can help Shrewsbury to keep winning games and to get to the top spot then that's good for me and good for the team."

Matt Gilks will have the squad number 31.
