Striker Signs

Posted on: Fri 09 Jan 2009

Town manager Paul Simpson has bolstered his striking options with the addition of Nick Chadwick to the club.

Chadwick started his career as a trainee at Everton and went on to make a number of appearances for the Premier League side. He then had a £250,000 move to join Championship side Plymouth Argyle; he had a couple of injuries during his time there but still went on to make over 80 appearances.

His contract wasn't renewed at Argyle and had the option to join a number of clubs in the summer, including Town, but in the end agreed a short term deal to join Hereford United in League 1.

The deal with Hereford ran out yesterday and Simmo has been quick to add Chadwick to the Town ranks:"We've managed to secure the short term signing of striker Nick Chadwick.

"He's a player who I have liked for a long time, I remember him as a young lad at Everton where he started out. He then had a £250,000 move to Plymouth where he played nearly 100 games but did have a couple of injuries.

"He came out of contract in the summer and I had conversations with his agent about coming here but he wanted to stay as high as he could so went to Hereford in League 1.

"His time with Hereford didn't really work out as he'd have liked and he didn't play as many games as he would have liked.

"We've now managed to get him in until the end of the season and the ball is really in his court to show everyone that he is still a player who is capable of playing at a higher level and secure something longer."

Chadwick trained with Town yesterday and had played for Hereford in a reserve game at the Prostar earlier in the season. He did enough to impress the Town coaching staff and Simpson is looking forward to working with Chadwick: "He's a fit lad who is in good shape is 6 foot tall and a good target man.

"I felt that we needed to add to what we already have to give us another option in the forward positions.

"I had a look at him in training on Thursday to see what shape he was in and he did well.

"We saw him play in a reserve game we had against Hereford earlier in the season and he looked decent then.

"There were other clubs who want to take him but we've nicked in to get him and as soon as he walked into the club he said this is where he would like to be.

"He is confident he can come in and form a partnership and get goals to help us go where we want to go.

"I'm looking forward to working with him and he'll come straight into the reckoning against Chester."

The week has seen the rumour mill at full steam with a number of players being linked to a move to the Prostar. Club's in League 2 still have to work within their transfer budget and the problems at Morecambe have highlighted what can happen if a club goes over that budget: "The chairman has been really supportive so far with his backing to allow us to do things but rumours of breaking transfer records and signing Championship players are so far off the mark they are not even worth commenting on.

"People have to be careful, not get too carried away and keep their feet on the ground.

"We are a League 2 club who are trying to move things around inside the club to allow us a little bit more financial clout to do things.

"That is the reason David Hunt left the club as I didn't feel he would really be pushing and that has created a little bit of space to hopefully bring someone else in who will help us to achieve what we want."

Nick Chadwick has been allocated the squad number 21.
