There are number of the existing squad out of contract at the end of the season and Simmo mentioned in previous interviews that discussions had started. These have now been put on hold as new Football League regulations could affect every clubs playing budget.
At present only the Coca Cola League 2 has a wage cap in place but discussions are currently ongoing between the Football League Chairman to extend this. The ideas being bounced around are that all Football League clubs would work within a budget that is set depending on their turnover and by their crowd numbers.
This has meant the club are currently looking into how this could affect the budget and because of this have currently put discussions with the players on hold.
ShrewsWeb spoke to Paul Simpson about how this may affect things with his squad building: "We've had quite a few discussions with some of the players before Christmas and just afterwards but we've come to a decision as a club that we are going to put them on hold for now.
"It's nothing against the players it's merely a case of having a better idea of where we are going to be at the end of the season.
"There are talks going on at the moment between all the Football League Chairman to try and put some sort of system in place for budgeting at all of the Football League clubs.
"At this moment in time it's very early in discussions and we don't know whether these rules are going to come into place and if they do what they will mean to us.
"This means that we don't really know what our budget will be for next year and until we get an idea of this we can't go committing ourselves to more contracts.
"It's not an unusual occurrence and there have been many, many occasions where contracts have been left until late in the season.
"The only negative side to it is that we run the risk of players leaving the club as other clubs may come in for them. There are a few who are classed as Bosman's as they are over 24 but there are a lot of them who are under 24 so they can't just walk away.
"In the ideal situation that won't be an issue and we will be able to agree terms and have a squad in place for next season."
