Midfielder In On Loan

Posted on: Tue 24 Feb 2009

Paul Simpson has this morning bolstered his squad with the addition of 18 year old midfielder David Worrall on an initial 28 days loan from West Brom.

Manchester Born Worrall started his career with Bury where he made his first team debut in 2006. West Brom picked him up on his 17th birthday and took him to the Hawthorne's on a 3 year deal. He's had a previous loan spell at Accrington Stanley and the move to Town is to help continue his development.

Simmo broke the news to ShrewsWeb this morning and was pleased to have added some extra pace to his midfield: "We are taking David Worrall on a 28 day loan from West Bromwich Albion.

"He's a player who I have seen a lot of this season playing in their reserves and in pre-season.

"He's an enthusiastic fit footballer who has good technical ability and I just feel that we need a little burst of enthusiasm and some legs in there who will make a difference for us.

"There is no guarantee that he will go straight into the side but I want to bring some people into the football club who I think can help us and David is a player who I fell could make a difference.

"He can play midfield or wide in the midfield, he's not a striker but is definitely an attack minded player.

"I want to look at him working around our first team and if he comes in and impresses as I'm hoping then we will look to extend it."

The addition of Worrall gives Simmo another attacking option to his midfield. It also gives the squad a boost with a new face to help freshen things up: "David gives us another option because he can play wide but also because for West Brom reserves he's been playing on the right of a 3 man midfield and that is a system that we have used over parts of this season.

"We have got to have as many options as we can and over the last few weeks I've been trying to get players in to give everyone a bit of a lift. Whether that is a lift because they are better than what we have or to kick up the backside for the ones who are already here.

"Every now and again you need to freshen it up and that's what I'm trying to do at the moment. We've tried to bring in players who I have though would go straight into the side but we've missed out as they've gone to sides at a higher level or their clubs haven't wanted them to go out."

The move brings in another of West Brom's talented youngsters into the Town squad. It's a link that the Town gaffer is looking to build across all of the Midland's clubs: "We've got a good relationship with West Brom and they are pleased with the way we are looking after Luke Daniels.

"Obviously we were disappointed with the lose of Joss Labadie after he's only had the one game when he was looking strong for us.

"We do have a good relationship and are only down the road from them, I would like to get a relationship with all of the local clubs like Villa, Birmingham, West Brom and Wolves."

David has had experience of League 2 before after making his debut for Bury as a 16 year old and a loan spell last season with Accrington Stanley last year so knows what to expect when he gets his chance: "He does know about this league and he knows Luke Daniels and has been speaking to him about us.

"He'll be fully aware of what's expected of him and what he can expect.

"There's a lot to look forward to and hopefully we will come in and do a job for us."

David Worrall will have the squad number 23 and Town fans will have their first chance to see him in action in the reserves game with Sheffield United this Wednesday.
