Graham Coughlan

Posted on: Fri 06 Mar 2009

One of the big talking points over the week has been the change of armband on the pitch for Town. For the Exeter game Graham Coughlan took over the armband from Ben Davies as Paul Simpson looked to ease the pressure on Benji.

ShrewsWeb spoke to Graham about this and he revealed that it was a great honour for him: "It's obviously a big honour and isn't something that I'm a stranger too as I have done the roll at most other clubs I have been at.

"Ben Davies is club captain and his roll doesn't change and my roll won't change.

"It's an exploratory change that the gaffer has made and hopefully it will work and some good will come from it.

"I've always said through my career that an armband doesn't mean anything, we have enough leaders in our dressing room and if I had my way there would be 11 armbands on show."

The draw with Exeter City put another point on Town's tally but it also saw them fall out of the play-off places. There are still eleven games left to play and a lot of possible points that can be earnt and Coughs still believes Town are in with a great chance: "We are really close and we all know where we need to improve as it has been spelt out for us.

"We are still in there fighting and have given ourselves a great chance, it may go to the wire which will be exciting.

"The past is history, the future is a mystery, we can't change the past but we can affect the future and we are aiming to give it a good shot.

"After 35 games we have given ourselves a massive opportunity and a massive chance.

"At the start of the season everyone is looking to be first and at present it hasn't worked out that way but first still isn't beyond us, If we believe then we can finish anywhere from 7th place to 1st place."

The belief inside the squad is there and the dressing room has been a good place to be this season. It has been a bit quiet over the last couple of weeks but the buzz has been back in full flow this week:"The banter is always good in the squad but it takes a little knock when we don't win but that is because our mentality is to win.

"The gaffer has done well to get us all going and believing and has played a massive part in keeping us focused and together.

"Maybe it's about time that we started to replay the faith the chairman, manager and the fans have put in us and we are working our socks off to achieve that.

"I think it is only a matter of time until we do that as the talent is there in the squad."

There was frustration from some fans on Tuesday night after the late goal went in to give Exeter a share of the points.Coughs' is urging everyone on the pitch and off the field to pull together for these last 11 games to bring success: "The fans are frustrated and that is understandable but it's disappointing that they voice their opinions during the 90 minutes.

"I'm a football fan myself and go support Celtic and Ireland and I do fall into that trap myself sometimes.

"All we need from now until the end of the season is for everyone who has the interest of Shrewsbury Town Football Club at heart to gel together and to give it one big shot to achieve success.

"Whether you are on the park or in the stands you have a part to play and it will be exciting from how until the end of the season.

"There will be ups and downs over the remaining 11 games but I feel that the highpoint of the season is still to come."

Saturday sees the visit of Notts County to the Prostar Stadium as Town look to pick up 3 points. The skipper is sure that County will come and give Town a game but there is a big incentive for Town if they win: "Notts County are a good football club with a big reputation and they will come here to compete.

"They will look to take a scalp and to turn us over and we have to be prepared for that.

"We have to be strong physically and both mentally and put the distractions out of our minds if the crowd gets frustrated.

"We are hoping for the 3 points and if we can get those on Saturday we could go into 4th place.

"It has been a bad season for us but if we are sat in 4th place on Saturday evening with 10 games to go then that's not a bad position to be in."
