Graham Coughlan

Posted on: Fri 20 Mar 2009

Town's captain Graham Coughlan was in good form when he spoke to ShrewsWeb this week.

The squad had been buoyed by the two good points on the road at Aldershot and Gillingham. Those points added to the win over Notts County see Town on a good little run of results: "A win against Notts County and then two away draws have stopped the rot and given everyone a lift.

"Aldershot and Gillingham are hard places to go but we put in good performances to come away with a point from each game and that sets us up nicely for this weekend.

"I think we have to mention the supporters who travelled to Aldershot on the Tuesday and then to Gillingham on the Saturday as they were a different class.

"They stuck with us and made plenty of noise and everyone in the dressing room appreciates that support they gave us.

"At Gillingham when things weren't going our way we could hear them roaring and cheering us on and didn't give up on us.They played a big part in us getting back into the game and thanks to each and everyone who travelled."

Grant Holt's two goals at Gillingham gave Town a deserved point and had it not been from a sterling performance from Gill's keeper Simon Royce it could have easily been 3 points.Cough's paid praise to Holty but realises that the rest of the squad need to chip in with goals as well: "Holty showed some nerves to put the penalty away at Gillingham, he does think he's a getting a goal for each of those spot kicks but I've had to tell him that only the one counts.

"The fans were putting pressure on him behind the goals but he's put the second one the other side of the keeper. If you get a ball in the penalty you will always give it to him as he's safe as houses.

"The second goal was a great header from Holty but the cross from Chris Humphrey was superb, if a Beckham or Ronaldo had done that you would be seeing on the TV for weeks to come.

"We need to get a few more goals from the other lads to help out on the goal front.I got one against Notts County but I should be getting more, as should Kelvin and Jacko. We know we should be getting at least 15 or 16 goals between us during the season from the centre back positions.

"It's coming to that part of the season where it's about results so we don't mind who scores."

Next up at the Prostar is in form Morecambe who will be looking to continue their own good run of form.It is a massive game for Town and one that Cough's believes Town can win with the fans help: "We got a result against Notts County at home and we are hoping for the same on Saturday against a tough, tough Morecambe side who are going really well under Sammy McIlroy.

"It is a massive game that we will be looking forward to and the fans can play a big part in that by getting behind the lads."

There is still all to play for at the top of the table with a number of clubs still in contention for the promotion places.Town are nicely poised in the pack and Cough's believes there will still be a few twists and turns before May 2nd: "Our home form has been decent and we want to keep that going until the end of the season.

"There are 4 games to go at a home and 4 games away from home and we need to maintain that good form.We just need to work that little bit harder to make sure we keep right on to the end.

"There will be a few more twists and turns in this league until the end of the season and it will be exciting.

"We go to Wycombe next week and I don't know what's going on there, they were storming away with the league around Christmas time but have now been fallen away a little bit.

"With 8 games to go we are competing for the automatic places and have given ourselves a great chance."
