Holty Wins Award

Posted on: Mon 30 Mar 2009

Grant Holt has won the FourFourTwo Player of the Year for Coca-Cola League 2 at the 2009 Football League Awards incorporating FourFourTwo's Top 50 Football League Players.

The announcement was made at a gala dinner at Grosvenor House, Park Lane on Sunday evening in front of more than 800attendees from clubs, sponsors and the football industry.

Holty was made up with the award but wants his goals to helpt the club achieve their ultimate goal: "It's a great honour to get this award, which hopefully says I'm having a successful season and I'm certainly happy to have got 26 goals so far.

"I want to get to 30 and if I do that sooner rather than later it will hopefully help us to get promoted. We're in the shake-up with just a few games to go, and if we end up getting into League 1 I'll be delighted that my goals have made a contribution."

The 27-year-old Shrewsbury Town striker received the accolade as a result of being ranked 40th in the FourFourTwo Top 50 Football League Players which was announced on the night. This made him the highest ranked League 2 representative, and as a result, the FourFourTwo Player of the Year for Coca-Cola League 2.

Since arriving at the Prostar Stadium from Nottingham Forest last summer, Holt has taken League 2 by storm. He's scored 26 goals in 42 appearances for the Shrews this term, including a memorable five goals against Wycombe Wanderers in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Commenting on the 2009 Football League Awards, Football League Chairman, Lord Mawhinney, said: "Once again, these awards have given us the opportunity to honour those individuals whose commitment to the game, their club or local community goes beyond the call of duty.

"The fourth Football League Awards have been an enormous success, and I congratulate all the winners on their achievements."

In taking the title, Holt beat off competition from Wycombe Wanderers' Tommy Doherty and Brentford's Charlie MacDonald, who were the second and third ranked League 2 players respectively in FourFourTwo's Top 50 Football League Players. The overall number one spot went to Wolverhampton Wanderers' striker, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, with Matt Fryatt of Leicester City the top ranked player from League 1. The full list of The Top 50 Football League Players can be found either in the May issue of FourFourTwo which is on sale now, or on the FourFourTwo website www.fourfourtwo.com.
