Town manager Paul Simpson was back at his desk this morning to start the preparation on his squad for next season. It's a day when players are told their futures and is never an easy one: "It is a horrible day and just as you think you can't get any lower than Saturday's game you have to come in and deal with this.
"It's part and parcel of the job and something that in all honesty I was looking to get too.
"I've released players from the football club who have done a decent job for us, worn the shirt with pride and gone about the business properly but my job is to try and make the football club as good as I can.
"The decisions have been made on all the players that I have released as my judgement is that I want to bring in better players in and I wish them all the best in what they go on to do.
"I want to wish them all the best in their futures and would like to say that none of them are bad lads and they have been a pleasure to work with."
There have been offers for Darren Moss, Omer Riza, Ben Davies, Kelvin Langmead, Steven Leslie and Chris Humphrey. The players are all part of Simmo's plans for next season and he is hoping that they will agree to stay with the club: "I think the players who I have made offers too are players who can help us on as a club.
"Four of them have been offered 2 year deals and a couple have been offered 12months so we will see what comes of that. They have until next week to make their decisions and I'm going to have a few days away myself as well and by Tuesday I'm hoping to have spoken to them or their agents and know what they are doing.
"We've now got depleted numbers who will be with us on July 1st, if these 6 come back in then it will add some great players to the squad.
"I think they are right for us and will help us and really hope that they will come back to us.
"We have the opportunity to go out now and start strengthening the side to bring in players who will help strengthen the squad."
There was some good news with three young players being given their first chance to show what they can do in professional football. Andre Gray and Harry Hooman have progressed through Town's Centre of Excellence while Jake Simpson has come from Blackburn Rovers: "Andre Gray and Harry Hooman are players that the fans will know about as they have been involved in the reserves and they deserve the opportunity to see if they can progress.
"If people don't know Jake is my son who had been at Blackburn Rovers and wasn't offered a contract in the end. I think it is an opportunity that we need to look at, young players who have been released from Premier League academies and if they are better than what we've got then we have to take the chance.
"The decision to take Jake has been taken on a footballing side as my staff have seen him training with us over the past months and think he is player who has the chance of making a career for himself.
"I look forward to working with the three of them and hopefully they can make the transition from youth football to reserves and then push into the first team."
It also signalled the end of the loan periods for Luke Daniels, David Worrall and Richard Walker. Simmo will keep an eye on what happens with Luke and David but won't be looking to extend Walks stay:"With David Worrall and Luke Daniels they have both done really well during their time on loan with us from Albion.
"Luke has been here all season and has been excellent, and the last few games showed what a quality goalkeeper he is. If the opportunity came to be able to take him again it is something that I would consider.
"The goalkeeping area is something that I know I have to look at and improve.
"David did well in the short spell and we will look at that again further down the line as they have both gone back into West Brom today to prepare for the summer.
"I spoke to Richard after Saturday's game, he did ok for us over the season but I've said to him anything for next season and I can only thank him for what he's done for the football club."
With the play-offs now over it is time for the Town manager to look ahead to next season and to build on the positives for this. The players are back in July 1st and the plan is to get them ready to hit form as the season kicks off: "We are in a position we need to move on, last year was enjoyable and was a bonus as I didn't expect a season like that when I came in the previous season.
"We have come on and developed and we have known all got to be better and use the momentum that we built up over the playoffs into pre-season and into the start of next season.
"I hope that the fans stay with us and understand what we are trying to achieve here and hopefully give them something to smile about next season.
"I've already had conversations about the areas that I feel we need to strength, those will continue and hopefully I can get the squad right to have a right good go at it next season.,
"We are back in on July 1st but we've had to replan all of the training programs that the players have got for over the summer because they now need a rest.
"The program will now be 10 days of work before they come in and we will have to tailor the pre-season but we will have to make sure that we hit the ground running in August when the first game comes around,
"We need to be fitter than we have been this season as well as being better technically organised to give us a fighting chance to have a good start to the season but then to make sure we continue that over the whole of the season."
