Paul Simpson

Posted on: Mon 03 Aug 2009

Town manager Paul Simpson was in a good mood when he spoke to ShrewsWeb this afternoon. He has added Joss Labadie and Kris Bright to his squad and was still looking to bring in a couple more new faces before Saturday.

Over the day Labadie had signed on loan and finally around 4pm the paperwork was completed to sign Bright on a 2 year deal: "I'm delighted to have been able to agree deals to bring in two players today.

"Joss Labadie is the one who I have been keen to bring in for quite a while but West Brom wanted him to take part in their pre-season preparations.

"They got through their final game at Cheltenham and I was straight on the phone to Dan Ashworth to try and get the move sorted.

"It was agreed over the weekend and Joss has come on an initial 28 day loan period which will hopefully be extended.

"After seeing Kris Bright in training for a couple of days and then how he performed at Tranmere I had seen enough to want to offer him a deal.

"After a weekend of negotiation about how we would get his clearance I'm pleased that we are now at the point where Kris has signed a two year deal.

"We now wait for the Greek FA to grant him his clearance which will hopefully be in by the weekend."

The gaffers hard work over the last few days has seen the Town squad bolstered by two exciting looking young players: "I think there is a lot to come from both of these players , Joss will benefit both ourselves and West Brom and with Kris he is still onlyyoung with a lot of football left in him.

"Kris showed a lot of good touches and awareness of people and once we get his fitness levels up and his timing right for headers I think there could be a real good footballer in there."

Kris had been training with Town for a couple of days late last week and took part in the game at Tranmere.Simmo was very secretive about who the mystery forward was at Tranmere and even the team sheet showed 'trialist': "He has been all over the world and had also represented his country at all different age groups.

"He's experienced all walks of life, some of those very negative, so has seen a hell of a lot for a player so young.

"He played in a couple of games for Norwich City and did well against Crystal Palace and Man United; there were a couple of Championship and League 1 clubs who wanted to look at him. That was my reason for being over secretive at the weekend and not letting anyone know who he was because I'd already seen him for two days and thought there was something there that we might benefit from.

"The last thing I wanted was for anyone to nip in and do something about it so I'm pleased with the work I put in over the weekend, even if it meant ruining a family Sunday."

With the start of the season fast approaching Simmo has acknowledged that there is need for bodies in a number of positions in the squad. He still has a number of targets in mind and is hopeful of adding to the squad before the weekend: "I'd still like to add a couple more if at all possible and there are still a couple of irons in the fire that I'm hoping will come through.

"I wouldn't say that they are really close to completion but I am hopeful over the week that we can add to what we have got.

"There were other players who I had in mind but the clubs won't allow them to come or coming to us at present isn't the right move in their eyes."

The news that Lewis Neal will be missing for a few weeks was another blow to the Town squad but things are starting to look up ahead of the Burton game: "We've got a couple of little injuries with Lewis Neal getting injured at the weekend and that is a real blow as I believe that he has got stronger and more productive with each game that he has played.

"To lose him now is a real blow and with the possibility that he could be missing for four weeks is disappointing.

"We've got a slight concern over Dean Holden although he has joined in training this afternoon, Graham Coughlan is coming back to fitness and he should be available for the weekend.

"There are some positives but there are also the negatives of some players not being available and we hope we have a strong enough side to compete properly against Burton. "
