Martin Wild speaks with Dave HIbbert
Dave Hibbert wore the look of a disappointed man after today's 1-1 draw with Torquay United at the Prostar Stadium. Hibbert's goal ten minutes from time, rescued a point for Town after they had fallen behind just four minutes earlier to a deflected strike by Chris Hargreaves. With Torquay having been reduced to ten men with almost half an hour left, the striker thought Town had missed an opportunity.
"It was a much improved performance, but to be fair it couldn't have been much worse than last week," said the leading goalscorer. "They've gone down to ten men so it's disappointing that we couldn't get the three points. To go a goal behind is unacceptable really when you have a man over but at least we showed a bit of grit and determination to get the equaliser.
"The way things have been going the last couple of weeks is sometimes the way it goes in football. We had a couple of chances there deep into added time but we couldn't stick them away, and it wasn't to be our day in the end. Better to come out of the game with a point and we just have to hope we can kick on from here."
So many times in football you see a side seemingly hampered by going a man down, only to find some resilience and make it even harder for the side with eleven, and so it proved again today.
"Well yeah, as soon as they went down to ten they made an immediate change, and seemed content to frustrate by putting everyone behind the ball and making it difficult for us to break them down," said Hibbert. "Their goal took a horrible deflection but it only came about through some sloppy play from us - just like it did last week. We had several chances to clear our lines and didn't. He's had a shot and like I said earlier, when your luck's out, it takes a deflection, wrong foots Chris (Neal) and goes in. When the chips are down you have to demonstrate some character, and we've got some good lads here. If you give it everything you've got, you generally get the rewards for that extra effort, and I think maybe we could have got the three points on another day."
Hibbert's goal was a first since scoring a fortuitous equaliser down at Cheltenham at the back end of September, and the likeable striker was pleased to be back amongst the goals again today.
"I picked up the injury which set me back a couple of weeks, but I think I'm getting stronger with every game, and felt really strong in the second half. Of course it's nice to score at any time but I wish it had been the winner."
The fans stuck with their team today after the disappointment of that early Cup exit, even when the side fell behind with time running out.
"They were really good today," said Hibbert. "Okay, we heard one or two boos at the end there but that's only because they were frustrated that we couldn't win the game. That's understandable and we fully deserved the stick we've received because we were nowhere near good enough last week. I think we showed them that we could fight for them and showed some pride in the shirt."
Attention quickly turns to the Shropshire Senior Cup Final at old adversaries Telford on Tuesday at the New Bucks Head, and Hibbo is ready if selected.
"The manager has said he wants to put a strong side out," he said, "so we'll have to wait and see if I'm in the team or not. It's being treated as a first team fixture and with it being a local derby, you want to play in it and do well so that the supporters have something to cheer about."
