Adam Calverley spoke to Terry Dunfield after the win over Bournemouth.
Terry Dunfield continued his terrific run of form with an impressive performance against high-flying Bournemouth on Saturday. The tough tackling midfielder redeemed himself with a fine finish against the Cherries after scoring an own goal in the away tie at Dean Court earlier in the season. The goal topped off another impressive game for the League Two player of the month nominee and he was more than pleased with his effort and the vital three points after the ninety minutes were up.
''That is two good performances against Bournemouth this season. They say luck evens itself out over the season and that was the case today.''
The 1-0 win keeps Town pushing for an automatic promotion spot after four points have been gained from three vital games at the top of the table in eight days. The 28-year-old knows the team have a chance of promotion if they can keep up the good form of 2010.
''The win shows we are progressing. We have been playing well over the last fifteen games and this has been a huge win to create some momentum for next week at Grimsby.''
Saturday's game saw two of the league's better sides play some quality football, but there will always be a strong physical element to matches at this level and that suits the battling Canadian's game to a tee.
''I have a good partner beside me in Kevin McIntyre for a good battle like we had today. Their two midfielders were decent as well but we had the ability to put our foot on the ball and pick out a pass and get further up the pitch to support the strikers.''
Dunfield's home city of Vancouver has been at the forefront of all sports fans minds in the past two weeks during the Winter Olympics and Dunfield has been impressing League Two fans across the Atlantic with his recent performances too. Town's number six finds himself up for the player of the month for the second consecutive month alongside the likes of Notts County forward Lee Hughes. Dunfield was quick to grant some credit to the supporters; some of whom have even set up a website called ILoveTerryDunfield.com.
''The fans have been a different class with me this season. It is brilliant because it gives us a huge advantage on the pitch. It was a bit creepy seeing masks of myself in the stands at Macclesfield, but playing at home now gives us a massive boost.''
It has taken some time for Salop fans to warm to the former Manchester City man though.
''I think we are getting there. Last year I would walk through town and get pies thrown at my head because people weren't happy with me. Football is a crazy game and things can change so quickly but there is no better feeling than when the crowd are singing your name. I am really enjoying my time here now.''
So, would he be voting for himself at http://fansaward.givemefootball.com?
''There weren't many places to rent here in Shrewsbury so I am out in the sticks and I have got no internet. I am living like a caveman at the moment!''
I am sure there are many fans willing to vote for the offline man of the moment.
Town travel to a Grimsby side that have not won for a gargantuan 25 games and Dunfield believes this season's Shrewsbury team have the ability to make it 26 winless matches for the Mariners.
''I think we have a more balanced team this year. Last year we had a side that accommodated for two or three very good individual players but now we have eleven players out there who work hard for each other. I am enjoying my part in the midfield and I hope it continues.''
When asked what it will take for Town to get promoted now, Terry was under no illusions how hard the next few months will be.
''I read Cougho's (Graham Coughlan) interview before the game and he came out with the old cliché that every game is now a cup final. He is right and we will just look ahead to Grimsby for now. They have not won in a while but that will happen eventually. We have to be professional and keep doing what we did in the second half and we will be ok.''
If Terry Dunfield is deservedly named player of the month then it could push him even further to help Town finally gain that elusive promotion spot. Roll on Grimsby and another three points gained towards the cause. There is no doubt that the diminutive Canadian will be central to a successful run in the tail end of the season.
