Weekend Tips

Posted on: Fri 03 Sep 2010

The weekend sporting action kick's off with Fabio Capello's beleaguered England side facing Bulgaria at Wembley tonight. I personally wouldn't back England with stolen money, not at the odds of 2/7 that Coral are offering. England are severely hit by injuries and confidence is very low. What's more, Wembley isn't the fortress it once was, as the Three Lions have conceded on 6 out of the last 7 games at the national stadium. From a betting perspective there's not much that appeals; if you're watching the game and having a bet then both teams to score at even money has slight value but personally I won't be tuning in!

One game I will be watching with interest over the weekend is Town versus the Millers. Two teams bang in form meet at a ground where Salop have had the upper hand in recent years. Rotherham manager Ronnie Moore has got his own players in this season and they will be a tough nut to crack at the Greenhous Meadow.

A lot will depend on how the Town rearguard copes with Millers hot-shot Adam Le Fondre, who incidentally is favourite at 9/2 to open the scoring. 'Alfie' is also as short as 9/4 to be top goalscorer in League Two this season - a terrible price when you consider his contract is up at the end of the season and there is a risk he'll move in January to a club in a higher division. This means there are inflated odds about other strikers in League Two, I will advise a bet on this market in due course when research has been concluded!

Elsewhere in the domestic leagues, Peterborough look a decent bet to see off Tranmere in League One. Kelvin Langmead has slotted in well at London Road, even captaining the side on one occasion. The Posh are blessed with attacking riches and the 'holy trinity' of Mackail-Smith, Boyd and McClean should be able to fire Peterborough to victory over a struggling Tranmere. Back Peterborough at even money with Coral.

In the basement division Aldershot look worth a few quid to see off Northampton, again at evens. The Shots retain the ball well and their big striker Marvin Morgan is playing well at present. The Cobblers look out of sorts and should struggle in this one.

Elsewhere in League Two, Oxford are yet to find their first win since making it back to the big time, but this could be the weekend. They entertain Morecambe and the arrival of striker Tom Craddock from Luton could give them a boost. James Constable has struggled to find the net so far but Craddock's arrival could relieve some of the pressure from the U's captain. Morecambe don't have a great away record and Oxford look a decent price at 11/10.

For those that enjoy placing multiple bets, a £5 treble on Peterborough, Aldershot and Oxford pays £42 if placed with Coral.

Finally, for those that follow the Sport of Kings, Prime Defender is worth a bet each way in the betfred sprint at Haydock (3.05) on Saturday. Currently priced at 20/1 with Coral.
