Welwyn born right-back Ben never made a first team appearance for his first club Watford and when Ray Lewington was relieved of the managerial hot seat at Vicarage Road he recommended "Herdy" to ex-team mate Gary Peters. The Town manager invited Ben to join in with Salop's training sessions and play in the reserves.
He impressed the Town manager enough to offer him a contract, and he quickly made himself a fans favourite in his first season at Gay Meadow with his energetic displays.
Injuries during the 2006/7 season restricted Herd to 31 league appearances but he was a late inclusion in the Shrewsbury side for the League 2 playoff final at Wembley, after Luke Jones picked up an injury in the warm-up. Shrewsbury went on to lose the game 3-1.
Last season Herd was almost ever-present, missing just one league match through suspension and this season you can read his weekly column on life as a League Two player at Betting.betfair.com.
