After Town's impressive comeback at home to high-flyers Dagenham, ShrewsWeb caught up with the winning captain Kelvin Langmead at the Prostar Stadium.
Town started quite brightly but were 1-0 down after 5 minutes when Paul Benson latched on to Francis Greens through-ball and fired an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net. Captain Langmead was unsurprisingly displeased with the start to the game, but praised his team's application to the task in hand: "We're disappointed with the way we started, to go 1-0 down, but I think we showed a lot of commitment today with that result. They're a good side, we knew it would be tough with them coming here as they are big, physical and they cross the ball well."
Town continued to test the visitors, and it wasn't long before Dave Hibbert had us on level terms, then Steve Leslie adding the winning goal just before the half finished. Langmead was pleased with the result but dismissed talk of revenge for the 5-0 defeat at Dagenham earlier this season: "Thankfully we dug deep, and we certainly deserved it in the end. It's not revenge but you do feel like you owe them one."
However, he was pleased that the team were able to put Augusts result firmly to the back of their minds: "When you get beat 5-0 it hurts, it still hurts now to look back, but hopefully that's put a few demons to bed, and I think we thoroughly deserved the victory today."
It was a memorable game for the 24 year old, for more than one reason as he revealed it was his first win as a captain: "It's the first time as a winning captain, I've started the game as captain 3 times but it's the first victory and it's something I am very proud to do and very honoured to do, I'm really pleased today."
It won't be the last time we see the number 8 handed the armband, with Graham Coughlan out for the next 3 weeks, and Langmead is happy to fill the role when necessary: "I think there are always areas I want to add to my game, things I want to be better at. To get a bit of responsibility is something I am glad of; hopefully I have done enough to warrant that again in the future, it's something that I have really enjoyed doing."
