Match preview: Wigan Athletic

8 December 2021

Take a look at all the latest stats and facts ahead of Town's Sky Bet League One away fixture with Wigan Athletic.

Shrewsbury Town return to Sky Bet League One action on this evening with a tough trip away to highflyers Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

Spirits are high in Shropshire following Saturday’s 2-1 win away to Sky Bet League Two side Carlisle United in the Second Round of the Emirates FA Cup. Salop will now travel to Premier League giants Liverpool next month. Wigan also progressed into the third round with a 2-1 away win over League Two side Colchester United. They will now host Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the next round.

Salop have hit a little bit of good form as of late and are unbeaten in their past three games in all competitions whilst only losing three games in their past 10, they now face a tougher test though against a Wigan side who could go top of the league with a win on Wednesday.

Wigan are currently sat second in the league table on 38 points, level alongside Rotherham United in first and Wycombe Wanderers in third. Wigan however have played two games less than Wycombe and one game less than Rotherham.

This isn’t the first time these two have met this season after the two sides met at the DW Stadium last month in the EFL Trophy last month. Wigan came out on top with a 2-0 win over Salop knocking Shrewsbury out of the competition.

Name: Wigan Athletic

Founded: 1932 (89 years ago)

Chairman: Talal Al Hammad

Biggest Win: 8-0 vs Hull City, Championship, August 2020

Biggest Defeat: 1-9 vs Tottenham Hotspur, Premier League, November 2009

Highest League Position: 10th, Premier League, 2005-06

Player to Watch: Will Keane

A product of the Manchester United academy and a former England youth international, Will Keane re-joined the Latics from Ipswich Town in October 2020 after spending a short spell on loan with Wigan back in 2013. Keane was only originally brought in on a short-term contract as the club tried to rebuild following administration, but after several impressive displays, the club offered the 28-year-old a longer contract.

He’s currently the club's second top scorer in all competitions with nine goals in 21 appearances as well as having five assists. He’s arguably one of Wigan's more threatening players and with him entering the prime of his career, he will want to add to his goal tally under the lights at the DW Stadium on Wednesday.

Match Reports

Match report: Wigan Athletic 2-1 Shrewsbury Town

8 December 2021

Shrewsbury Town suffered late heartbreak away at highflying Wigan Athletic on Wednesday night.

The hosts took an early lead through their captain Tendayi Darikwa, who stole in at the back post to slot home James McClean's left-footed cross in the second minute.

Despite the early setback, Salop did not look startled and pushed back at Wigan. Their best chance from the opening stages saw Josh Daniels' header cleared off the line by McClean with 11 minutes played.

After a slow period in the game that was largely dominated by the Latics, Shrewsbury managed to pull themselves level in the 39th minute. A sloppy pass found Nathaniel Ogbeta, who burst forward and passed the ball out to Dan Udoh on the left-wing. The Shrews' in-form striker drilled the ball across the box that Ryan Bowman tapped home from close range.

The first 15 minutes of the second half emulated the quiet period that was displayed in the first, with neither side creating much trouble for their opposition. Wigan enjoyed a period of dominance in and around the Salop penalty area just after the hour mark but couldn't muster up anything more than a couple of teasing crosses.

Shrewsbury's only replies during this period consisted of a Udoh shot that was blocked on the edge of the box and a darting run from Ogbeta that saw him make his way as far at the byline where a slightly heavy touch sent the ball out of play.

Wigan almost re-took the lead in the 82nd minute when former Salop player Callum Lang made a penetrating run through Shrewsbury's defensive lines, reaching the edge of the penalty box and unleashing a fierce strike that was well saved by Marko Marosi.

The intensity heightened in the latter stages of the game and, unfortunately for the travelling Salopian contingent, Wigan notched a winner in the second minute of extra time. 19-year-old Thelo Aasgaard found space to curl the ball into the bottom left-hand corner of Marosi's net, sending Shrewsbury back to Shropshire empty-handed.
