Match Preview | MK Dons

23 January 2023

Shrewsbury Town make the trip to Stadium MK Tuesday night to take on MK Dons in the Sky Bet League One. Kick-off is at 7:45pm.

Salop recorded ran out 5-1 winners at home against Cambridge United on Saturday in another emphatic victory for Steve Cotterill’s side. Captain Luke Leahy opened the scoring 33 minutes into the game through a penalty, before Jordan Shipley made it two in first-half stoppage time. The third came through Matthew Pennington in the 57th minute, but Cambridge pulled one back through Joe Ironside in the 69th minute to make it 3-1. Just two minutes later though, Salop scored their fourth with Christian Saydee getting on the scoresheet. Finally, Luke Leahy made it five in the 91st minute to round off the fine display at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

MK Dons were 2-1 winners in their game away at Forest Green Rovers last Saturday. It was the hosts who took the lead though with Myles Peart-Harris scoring in the 29th minute. Two minutes before the end of the first half, the visitors would make it 1-1 through Mo Eisa. The game would be turned around quickly after the interval when Eisa scored his second after 51 minutes to secure a valuable away win for his side.

There have been a total of 21 meetings between Salop and MK Dons, with Salop winning six of those, losing eight and drawing on seven occasions. When the sides met in October last year, Shrewsbury were 2-1 winners at home.

Match Report | MK Dons 0-1 Shrewsbury Town

24 January 2023

Tom Bayliss' 89th-minute strike proved the difference as Town picked up yet another three points on the road.

In what was a quiet game, Town converted their only clear chance of the game when Taylor Moore intercepted a loose pass and fed Bayliss.

Bayliss took the ball in his stride and slotted home from a tight angle to send the 267 travelling fans into wild celebrations.

The home side’s best chance came early on when Jonathan Leko whipped in a dangerous cross which Mo Eisa headed narrowly wide of the target.

Having convincingly beat both Burton and Cambridge in the previous two games, it was no surprise to see manager Steve Cotterill name an unchanged line-up for the trip to Stadium MK.

Sticking with a 3-5-2 formation, Christian Saydee and Rob Street continued their partnership up front with Carl Winchester sitting just behind Luke Leahy and Killian Phillips in the midfield three.

MK Dons went with a 4-3-3 system with Will Grigg in the centre-forward position. Leko was on the right flank and Eisa on the left.

In what proved to be a quiet first half, both sides created two chances to open the scoring.

It was the hosts who threatened first as Leko whipped in a dangerous cross. That was met by the on-rushing Eisa who produced a powerful header that flashed wide.

Just after the 20-minute mark, the Dons threatened again when Dawson Devoy played the ball out wide to Eisa.

He then cut inside from the wing before unleashing a curling strike that Marosi got down well to beat away.

Town responded with Leahy playing a ball that sent Street charging into the box. The striker then lashed a strike toward goal that sailed narrowly over the bar.

Then just before the break, Leahy sent in a dangerous free-kick that goalkeeper Jamie Cummings dropped.

The shot-stopper, though, then managed to pounce on the loose ball ahead of a number of Town players who were looking to latch onto it.

Steve Cotterill looked to his bench at half-time, with Street making way for the energetic Bayliss.

The change of personnel meant Town changed to a 3-4-2-1 formation with Bayliss and Phillips just behind Saydee.

MK Dons had an early chance to take the lead after the interval from a deflected Devoy cross caused some confusion in the box, but Tom Flanagan cleared with ease.

In the 54th minute, the home side had a free kick on the edge of the box which Eisa took but the Salop wall did its job and sent it over for a corner which they dealt with.

Just past the hour mark, Leko cut inside following some fancy footwork but Flanagan used his body well and blocked the shot.

The home side won a free kick in the Town half with 20 minutes remaining which got played out to the left-hand side.

The ball was swung into the box which Matt Smith did well to head it but his effort got deflected behind for a corner which Town dealt with.

Shrewsbury kept their composure and resilience and it was rewarded in the 89th minute with a dramatic winner.

Moore picked up a miss placed pass high up the pitch and played in the onrushing Bayliss who calmly fired past Cummings. The goal meant Town took all three points back to Shropshire and took their unbeaten run to three.
