Match Report | Shrewsbury 1-2 Peterborough

23 December 2023

Shrewsbury Town fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat at home to second-placed Peterborough.

Despite Town taking the lead through Jordan Shipley’s cross-turned shot, the visitors managed to pull the game back.

Firstly, Ricky-Jade Jones slotted home a goal from close range, then Hector Kyprianou put Peterborough ahead shortly after.

Salop had a chance in injury time as Chey Dunkley’s header hit the bar, but unfortunately, it wasn’t to be.

Team news:

Boss Matt Taylor made one change from the team that took on Portsmouth last weekend - with Elliott Bennett having recovered from a minor knock sustained in training.

It meant Elliott returned to the side at right wing-back with Morgan Feeney the man to make way.

In a 3-5-2 formation, Jordan Shipley operated on the left with Nohan Kenneh, Carl Winchester and Taylor Perry in midfield. Dan Udoh and Ryan Bowman were the front two.

Peterborough, under the guidance of Darren Ferguson, lined up in a 4-2-3-1 system with Ricky-Jade Jones the central striker.

Joel Randall operated in the 10 role with Ephron Mason-Clark and Kwame Poku out wide.

Report:

Following a quiet opening 15 minutes, the first real chance of the game came Town’s way when Aaron Pierre rose highest to meet a corner only to see his effort deflect wide.

Moments later, Pierre was unfortunately withdrawn due to injury and was replaced by Morgan Feeney.

Peterborough grew into the game from that point with Ferguson's side creating a flurry of chances.

First, Jones was slipped in one-on-one only to completely scuff his effort.

Shortly after, some brilliant play by Mason-Clarke saw him hit the byline before squaring it to Harrison Burrows whose shot was blocked well by Dunkley.

The Posh were intent to play out from the back, but time and time again Town did well to win the ball high and put them under pressure.

And a decent move just before the break saw Perry, Udoh and Bowman combine before Shipley saw a shot well blocked from just inside the box.

Town went on to open the scoring just before the hour mark when Shipley's cross-turned-shot sailed over Nicholas Bilokapic’s head and into the net.

However, The Posh equalised shortly after as Kyprianou slipped in Jones who finally got the goal he was after.

Town responded with a nice passage of the play ending with Kenneh’s seeing a strike from the edge of the box deflect wide.

Despite Town’s efforts, Posh then went on to take the lead as David Ajiboye’s cross found Kyprianou who slotted home from close range.

In the last few seconds of the game, Town came agonisingly close to an equaliser when Bennett’s corner was powered against the bar by Dunkley.

And from that point, the visitors held on to claim all three points.
