Match Reports

Match Report | Shrewsbury 1-2 Cambridge

3 February 2024

Shrewsbury fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Cambridge.

Dan Udoh opened the scoring for Salop but Lyle Taylor levelled almost straightaway. Taylor then put Cambridge ahead immediately after the restart.

Shrewsbury pressed for an equaliser from that point with Dan Udoh and Chey Dunkley going close.

And while they threw men forward in the closing stages, they couldn’t find the final touch they needed to secure a point.

Team news:

Following what was a convincing win at Northampton last weekend, it was no surprise to see Hurst stick faith with the same time that was so impressive at Sixfields.

It meant Town remained in a 4-3-3 formation with Morgan Feeney, Dunkley, Aaron Pierre and Mal Benning the back four.

In midfield, Carl Winchester sat in a holding role with Taylor Perry and Tom Bayliss more advanced.

In attack, Tom Bloxham started on the right wing with Jordan Shipley on the left and Udoh up front.

Cambridge lined up in a 4-2-3-1 system with Elias Kachunga in the number 10 role and Sullay Kaikai and Jack Lankester on the wings. Lyle Taylor was the lone striker.

Match Report:

In what appeared to be a dream start for Hurst on his return to the Meadow, Town started brightly and opened the scoring in the 12th minute following a superb passage of play.

Winchester sprayed the ball out wide to Shipley who drove down the line before sending in a dangerous low cross.

And that delivery was turned home with a wonderfully delicate finish from Udoh.

The home crowd were ecstatic but within 90 seconds Cambridge were level with Jack Lankester playing a good ball into Taylor who tapped in from close range.

From that point, the half proved relatively even with both teams only managing to create half chances.

For Town, Udoh glanced a header wide following a cross from Feeney, while for Cambridge Sullay Kaikai saw a shot well blocked by Benning.

Cambridge went 2-1 up immediately after the restart with Taylor securing his brace.

In what was a goal similar to Taylor's first, Katchunga sent in a cross with Taylor in the right place at the right time to slot it past Marko Marosi and in.

Town responded and had a great chance to level when Bloxham’s cross found Udoh in the middle. He then sent a powerful strike inches past the post.

Shortly after, Salop had another golden opportunity as Dunkley met a corner but somehow keeper Jack Stevens stopped the ball on the line at the second attempt.

Town continued to throw men forward but in stoppage time Bloxham was dismissed after he received a second yellow card.
