Match Report | Cambridge 1-1 Shrewsbury

14 October 2023

Shrewsbury secured a point on the road following a 1-1 draw at Cambridge.

A well-contested game saw little to separate the two sides with Town having chances fall for Brandon Fleming, Tom Bayliss and Jason Sraha.

However, in the 69th minute Cambridge took the lead through Michael Morrison.

Town, though, refused to be beaten and with just two minutes of the 90 left, Taylor Perry equalised with a powerful finish.

Team news:

A combination of injuries and international call-ups meant Town had seven first-team players unavailable for the trip to the Abbey Stadium.

Max Mata (New Zealand) and Nohan Kenneh (Liberia) were both away with their national sides with George Nurse, Elliot Thorpe, Jordan Shipley, Ryan Finnigan and Morgan Feeney all in the treatment room.

It meant boss Matt Taylor had to shuffle his pack as Salop looked to build on last weekend's win.

Sticking with a 3-5-2 formation, Sraha made his first league start in the back three alongside Chey Dunkley and Tom Flanagan.

Carl Winchester remained at right wing-back with Mal Benning on the left and Fleming joining Taylor Perry and Bayliss in the middle of the park. Up front, Dan Udoh was partnered by Kieran Phillips.

On the bench, there was a place for Aaron Pierre after we confirmed earlier in the day we have re-signed the defender on a short-term deal.

Cambridge lined up in a 4-2-3-1 system with former Town man Fejiri Okenabirhie as the lone striker. Jack Lankester operated in the number 10 role with James Brophy and John-Kymani Gordon out wide.

It was Town who created the first chance of the match when, in the seventh minute, Benning won a free-kick on the edge of the box after a handball.

Bayliss fizzed in the resulting free-kick with a huge goal-mouth scramble taking place before Cambridge scrambled it away.

The hosts responded and should have broken the deadlock shortly after when a corner fell kindly for Morrison. But the defender hacked a volley wide of the post when he should have done better.

Shrewsbury threatened again when another goal-mouth scramble first saw Benning's effort blocked. Dunkley then saw another shot blocked before, finally, Fleming had a strike claimed by Jack Stevens.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, the hosts went close again when Okenabirhie hit the byline before cutting the ball back to Lankester. The former Ipswich man then smashed the bar from close range.

Moments before the whistle went for half-time, Udoh held it up well before turning and teeing up Bayliss. From just inside the box, he then sent a powerful effort past the post.

The first chance after the interval came Town’s way as Flanagan played it to Sraha on the edge of the box. He then curled a strike narrowly over the bar.

Ten minutes later, Bayliss floated in a clever ball which Udoh brought down well before sending in a dangerous cross. But the U’s managed to hack clear inside the six-yard box.

Town had looked dangerous in the second half but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock when Morrison danced through the defence before placing the ball into the bottom corner.

Shrewsbury immediately went in search of an equaliser with Udoh cutting the ball back to substitute Tunmise Sobowale who saw an effort claimed by the keeper.

But with two minutes to play, Taylor's men did get the equaliser they undoubtedly deserved.

Following a goal-mouth scramble, the ball fell for Perry who emphatically fired home.

Late into stoppage time, Flanagan struck the ball from 35 yards out, but his effort sailed just wide of the post and the spoils were shared.
