Ten-man Shrewsbury fell to a 2-0 loss at Wigan - in a match that saw Chey Dunkley dismissed after just four minutes.

Dunkley was sent off after bringing down Thelo Aasgaard who had been slipped through on goal.

With 10 men, Town defended resolutely and played some good football at times.

But goals from former Salop loanees Stephen Humphrys and Callum Lang saw the Latics earn all three points.

Boss Matt Taylor made two changes from the team that faced Barnsley on Tuesday - with Elliott Bennett and Ryan Bowman both earning recalls to the starting XI.

It meant Town lined up in a 3-5-2 system with Bennett joining Taylor Perry and Tom Bayliss in central midfield. Up front, Bowman replaced Max Mata.

Wigan lined up in 3-4-2-1 system with Thelo Aasgaard and Martial Godo both operating in the 10 role behind Stephen Humphreys.

A trip to the DW Stadium is never easy but Town's chances of coming away with a result were dealt a hammer blow in just the fourth minute when Dunkley was given a straight red card.

The former Latic was dismissed for bringing down Aasgaard who had been slipped in on goal.

Despite having a man advantage, Shrewsbury's resistance and organisation ensured the hosts struggled to create clear-cut chances.

Godo danced into the box and saw a low effort saved by Marosi. Humphrys also produced a cracking effort from 25 yards that Marosi kept out with a brilliant, one-handed, save. 

Overall, though, Town were doing well with the lively Dan Udoh intelligently holding the ball up before finding Taylor Perry who fired over.

Despite that positivity, the hosts got themselves ahead in the 35th minute when Humphrys hit another effort from range that this time nestled into the bottom right corner. 

Town pushed for an equaliser before the break with Mal Benning delivering a number of long throws into the box.

Bayliss then danced his way to the byline before sending in a dangerous cross that Charlie Hughes did well to clear.

Town continued to defend well following the re-start.

But on the hour, Wigan had two good chances to double their advantage.

First, Godo stood up a cross that Humphrys headed wide when he really should have scored.

Jordan Jones then curled a strike against the crossbar from just inside the box.

Town responded with Benning seeing a strike from the edge of the box blocked.

But in the 66th minute, Wigan got a second when former Salopian Callum Lang headed in a Callum McManaman cross - with that enough to earn the hosts all three points.
