Callum lands another England call

More U17 experience for young keeper

Shrewsbury Town youth teamer Callum Burton has received another call up from England under-17s.

The goalkeeper has been drafted in by coach John Peacock to replace injured Manchester City prospect Angus Gunn in the England squad set to compete in the St George's Park International Tournament later this month.

Callum, aged 16, will now hope to play some part in matches against Italy and Portugual, both at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium, while England's other fixture is against Turkey at Northampton's Sixfields Stadium.

The tournament runs from August 29 through to September 2.

Callum, previously capped once at under-16 level, enhanced his growing reputation with junior England teams by playing twice for the under-17s in the Nordic Tournament in the Faroe Islands last week.

He played against Finland and Sweden as England finished runners-up.

Wayne Evans, Shrewsbury Town's head of youth, said: "First of all it's fantastic for Callum as an individual, but then it's also good for Glyn Thompson from the coaching work he's done with him in the Centre of Excellence. He's worked with him a lot and now Gavin Ward is involved as well.

"Callum had eight or nine days in the Faroe Islands, played a couple of games, and now he's going away again next Saturday for three games so it's fantastic."
