Rodgers a doubt for Bury

20 December 2012

Illness means Luke could miss out on Gigg Lane trip

Shrewsbury Town striker Luke Rodgers is doubtful for tomorrow night's trip to Bury owing to illness.

Manager Graham Turner hopes the on-loan Portsmouth man will be available for the Gigg Lane clash but said he had cover in Welsh under-21 international duo Tom Bradshaw and Ryan Doble should Rodgers be ruled out.

"There's a little bit of doubt about Luke Rodgers who has been feeling unwell for a couple of days," said Graham. "He's got his instructions, his medicine, and we're hoping he will be fit.

"We've lost one game in five and he's been part of the team that have certainly improved results and could and should have done a lot better in terms of the return.

"He's got that ability to work hard, he gets hold of the ball and he's combined well with Marvin Morgan.

"It's one of those situations where it is disappointing if he doesn't make it but I'm always optimistic about things and if he's not fit then it could be an opportunity for somebody else, Tom Bradshaw or Ryan Doble.

"Ryan has been looking particularly good in training at the moment so there's a possibility he may start.

"Tom has got that energy and pace up front so he's got attributes that would go with Marvin Morgan so I've got a choice there."

GT revealed he may have considered recalling Terry Gornell from his loan spell at Rochdale had the striker not been suspended following a recent red card for the Spotland club.

He said: "We had a 24 hour recall on Terry but unfortunately he's now suspended for three matches so that takes away our option of calling him back and playing him.

"He's got some good game time under his belt, he's got a few goals for Rochdale so it's a disappointment for me that he's been sent off and misses three matches because if we needed him we could have called him back."

The boss added Mark Wright is again likely to be missing at Bury as he recovers from the knee injury recently sustained at Crawley, but he expects the winger to be available for the Boxing Day clash at home to Notts County.
