A goal in each half from the on-form Jon Taylor and the returning Paul Parry gave Town a vital 2-1 victory over fellow strugglers Carlisle United.
Liam Noble had equalised for the Cumbrians prior to half-time, but Town put in a professional performance after the break to push on and seal all three points.
Graham Turner made three changes from the side that drew 2-2 at Crawley last weekend. Two were enforced with Paul Parry and Aaron Wildig coming into the side after injuries to Mark Wight and Luke Summerfield, whilst Cameron Gayle made his debut in place of Joe Jacobson.
With both sides embroiled in a scrap towards the foot of League One, the opening stages proved tight and cagey, the visitors coming closest after seven minutes when Joe Garner let fly from 25 yards – but his effort arrowed just past Chris Weale’s right-hand post.
From nowhere, the Cumbrians almost took the lead again when Frank Simek’s early cross from the right caught the Town defence napping, but Lee Miller’s side foot finish was wide of the mark.
But it was Town who sparked first, and it was Jon Taylor who lit the match. Luke Rodgers held the ball centrally before feeding Taylor down the right hand channel. The nippy winger took on one, and then cut into the box before hitting a rasping drive across the keeper and into the corner to make it 1-0 on 22 minutes.
Eleven minutes later and the visitors were back on level terms after an attacking Shrewsbury free-kick collapsed. Garner was the architect as he broke at pace to run the length of the pitch before cooly feeding the unmarked Liam Noble who steered his effort past Weale.
Half-time: Town 1-1 Carlisle
Carlisle began the second half on the front foot and were within a whisker of taking the lead for the first time on 53 minutes. Matty Robson was given acres of space on the left hand corner of the Town 18-yard box, but his drilled effort flew narrowly wide.
Two minutes later, it was Robson again who was causing trouble to the Town backline. This time however, his drive was on target but Weale was alert enough to beat the effort away from danger.
Against the run of play, Town cranked up the tempo and retook the lead on 64 minutes. Morgan went on a trademarked powerful run into the Cumbrian box and forced a shot away under pressure, but his effort was deflected and looped to the back post for Parry to fly in with a volley and score.
A well drilled move down the right almost had Carlisle back level on 82 minutes. Substitute David Symington collected on the flank a provided a drilled pull back for Miller who’s well-timed volley roared narrowly over the crossbar.
The Cumbrians continued to pile on the pressure in the closing stages as the Town defence sunk deep into its own box, but the Shrews hung on to clinch what could prove to be a pivotal three points.
