The youth team have returned to the hard work of pre-season training

Shrewsbury Town's scholars have returned to the hard work of pre-season training ahead of the 2012/13 Youth Alliance campaign.

There are a number of new faces as this year’s first year scholars take their first steps towards a possible career in professional football. It is also a big season for the second years as they look to impress and push for a professional contract.

The youngsters will be under the guidance of head of youth Wayne Evans and his team and Wayne is looking forward to the season ahead:”We've given the lads programmes to follow over the summer as we really want to hit the ground running early on. Those who have followed the programmes should be ok but those who haven't will have to quickly catch up.

“It's a big year for both the 1st years and for the 2nd years, there are promising players in both groups and it is our job to help them to develop to the best of their potentials.

“With the introduction of the EPPP a number of clubs have scaled down or stopped their youth programmes so it will be an interesting and challenging year ahead.

“We have a number of good pre-season games to get the lads playing ahead of the season, but as always the aim of the clubs youth system is about developing players for the 1st team rather than results.”
