We keep going back to basics and we always will at any level of football no matter who you are playing in the Premier League or Conference.
Conceding after 10 minutes by not staying with runners and not defending crosses followed by a sending off for Warren Holmes on 16 minutes for a professional foul meant it was always going to be hard against an organised and complete Walsall side, by that I mean very few areas of weakness and good players to be able to effect games.
Our opportunities were limited throughout the first half with Jack Richards having our best attempt with a well struck shot from 25 yards forcing a good save from the Walsall keeper. Burton was called upon to make a couple of routine saves but could not deny Walsall’s second on 36 minutes as again our defending was poor to enable an unchallenged shot to find the corner of the net.
2-0 at half time gave us time to plan and think about the approach to the second half, however my tea hadn’t gone cold when Burton made another save on 46 minutes. We gave the ball away in midfield and were punished on 49 minutes when a cross came over which we failed again to defend to make it 3-0 and really finish the game. Scott Ryan did manage a consolation goal on 63 minutes from some good work from Anderson, Carpenter and Gwilliams but Walsall were always in control of the match.
Overall disappointing by the defeat but our decision making and basic errors especially with simple passes has to get better quickly.
