Town playing Wolves friendly

Town travel into Compton to take on Wolves

Shrewsbury Town are taking a team to Wolves for a training ground friendly at the Championship club's Compton headquarters this afternoon.

Manager Graham Turner stressed it would be a useful exercise and a chance for several men to potentially put themselves in the frame for a place in the Town side for Saturday's League One trip to Fratton Park to face Portsmouth.

"We're playing at their training ground and it will be an opportunity for one or two players to stake a claim for a first team place," he said.

"We've got one or two senior players, people like Joe Jacobson and Ryan Doble, one or two others, who are vying for a place for Portsmouth so it will be interesting to see how they do and what the level of performance is like.

"We've been there once or twice and it's always a decent game. I would think it would be the majority of the Wolves under-21 side so it will be a good work out.

"The surface is always good on their training ground so it's a good opportunity for players that play to have a look at a big club's facilities and have a game against them."

The boss added these games were also beneficial for him to keep an eye on some of the young players in the opposition ranks given his previous loan swoops for Wolves duo David Davis and Sam Winnall, the striker now on the comeback trail from injury.

He said: "You try and keep relationships with the big clubs in the Midlands and we're always quite happy to go across and play any of them. We can see what they've got and we keep those close connections."
