Jones: “We just couldn’t get going”

Darren Jones frustrated after defeat

By Matt Johnson

Darren Jones revealed his frustration to ShrewsWeb post-match after Swindon came away from the Greenhous Meadow with all three points in a 1-0 reverse.

The 29-year-old defender could do nothing to prevent the Robins’ 78th minute goal on the counter after Town had almost scored themselves moments earlier.

“It’s a bad loss for us today, we should’ve at least taken a draw,” said Jones. “It was very disappointing. Second half we just couldn’t get going, people looked tired but we’ve got to keep clean sheets to have a chance.

“They weren’t better than us, they just had that one chance at the end, but we were pulling ourselves apart to get a goal and that left us open at the back. That’s one thing we’ve got to react to on Tuesday.”

It’s now seven on the trot without a clean sheet for Town and Jones pinpointed that, and the inability to create enough chances, as the key factors for the defeat and other recently dropped points.

“We didn’t get that many shots in and we’re not going to win games if we don’t shoot. It wasn’t even just that. We didn’t seem to create enough opportunities, but Swindon worked hard to close us out and it’s something we’ll look at.

“We’ve talked about the lack of clean sheets and we’ve got to do a lot better. We’re not keeping enough as we should be and that’s one thing we have got to try and work harder at.”

Brentford away on Tuesday represents yet another quick turnaround and Jones admits the constant flow of fixtures is, more often that not, a blessing in disguise as it gives the opportunity to make amends for poor results.

“That’s the great thing about football. You’ve got so many games so close together, so you can always try and rectify defeats pretty quickly. We’ve got Brentford on Tuesday and for some reason we prefer the night games at the moment, so it would be a great game to go down there and get three points and forget about this one.

“We’ve played against all the top teams in this league and no one has fazed us, so if we get in the right frame of mind and go down there positive, there is no reason why we can’t get three points.”
