“We’ve ended the season on a high”

Connor thrilled with first senior goal and run in team

By Matt Johnson

Connor Goldson revealed his delight at scoring his first senior goal as Town ended the campaign with a 3-2 home victory over Portsmouth.

Speaking to ShrewsPlayer, Goldson reflected on a match that looked so comfortable for Town until Pompey staged a fight back to leave the result hanging in the balance late on.

“It was a great victory, it was needed,” said Goldson. “It pushed us up in the table and it’s a good return after we’ve just come up from League Two and everyone in there is happy.

“We looked so comfortable at 3-0 and to let them score two was disappointing, so we had to grind out the last ten minutes, but we did well.

“We’ve got a very young team, so when we come up against very good players, we need to make sure when we get a few goals up that we don’t let teams back into the game, because it could’ve changed differently.”

Goldson’s sixth minute goal set Town on the way to a victory at the Greenhous Meadow that secured an aesthetically pleasing 16th placed League One finish that looked unlikely at the turn of the year.

“If you would’ve said to any fan or player around Christmas time that we were going to finish 16th they would have chewed your hand off, so it shows that we’ve all stuck together through the bad and good times and we’ve come out good.

“I was buzzing to score, it was my first league goal and I’ve played 15 games, so I was obviously happy to get a goal. It felt good.

“Hopefully more for next season, Id rather just be playing regularly first then thinking about scoring goals. I was disappointed not to keep a clean sheet today, that’s what I wanted first and foremost after getting them in the last two games, but I’ll take the goal.”

Ending the campaign on back to back home victories acts as a soothing tonic after a season of ups and downs for Town, and while Goldson is looking forward to the summer break, he is eager to get back playing having recently cemented a place in the starting line-up.

“I’m looking forward to spending time with friends and family and obviously I’ll have to come back and work hard to show it next season, but at the same time, I’ve just got back into the team I’m loving it at the minute, so its just disappointing to finish.

“We’ve ended the season on a high, so hopefully we’ll take that into next season. Last season we got promoted, but we lost the last game of the season and that showed after we lost the first few games of this season. So hopefully now, winning this one we’ll take it into the first game of next and try and start well.”
