“I’m delighted and very proud”

Tam thrilled with gaffer’s captaincy call

New Town skipper Tamika Mkandawire spoke of his immense “pride” after being named by Graham Turner as Club captain for the new campaign.

The powerful defender was made captain under Turner when the pair were together at Hereford, and Mkandawire exclusively revealed his joy to ShrewsWeb after the announcement.

“I’m delighted and I’m very proud,” said Mkandawire.

“I will obviously do my best as captain to lead by example and help the team.

“The gaffer made me captain at Hereford when I played under him there. We were pretty successful back then, so hopefully we can go on to be just as successful here.

“I’m one of the older members of the squad now and I’ve got a lot more experience so hopefully I can help the lads with anything they need on or off the pitch.

“I noticed on the first day when I walked in that we have a very young squad, but I think that’s a good thing. Obviously there will be lots of energy and lots of enthusiasm and lots of ability as well.”

Mkandawire was quick to praise his team mates for the closeness and togetherness felt in the dressing room and believes the current squad has the right blend of youthfulness and experience to be successful.

“The team spirit is very good. It’s quite a tight knit group, but the players who have come in have gelled very well and that will be a fact that the gaffer looks at when he brings in other players to see if they fit straight into the group. That’s another bonus for us and will hopefully be something that impacts on us on the pitch.

“I think we’ve got that right mix of youth and experience. We’ll be looking for everyone to bring what they have to the table in their own way, not necessarily through barking orders, but through their performances and leading by example on and off the pitch.”

With pre-season now under their belts, Town head into full-scale action with three games in a week starting on Saturday and skipper Tam can’t wait to get started.

“Pre-season is over and the league starts so it’s exciting. First game with MK Dons and then Bolton on Tuesday, and Orient away the following Saturday so we’re straight into it.

“It’s what you look forward to as a pro, pre-season is something you have to go through in order to get to the start of the season. Everybody’s looking forward to Saturday and hopefully it will go well.”
