“I’ve settled in really well”

Loanee Tavernier happy to be at the Town

After joining Town on loan from Newcastle last week, full-back Tavernier admitted he can’t wait to make his debut ahead of the season curtain raiser with MK Dons.

The 21-year-old has paid adage to both his team mates, and the backroom staff, for making him feel right at home and he has openly declared his readiness to extend his one-month deal, should the opportunity arise.

“I’ve settled in really well,” said Tavernier.

“The lads and the coaching staff have taken me in really quick and I just feel really welcome.

“I’ll bring an attacking option from defence. I like to get forward a lot and of course I love to defend as well, so my main aim is to just be creative in our attacking play and give more of an option.

“I think it all comes down to the two clubs. The final say will be with Newcastle, but I’m happy to extend my loan and play as many games as I can.”

Tavernier spent much of his pre-season preparation with the Toon before linking up with Graham Turner’s side, but he admits it has been a smooth switch and he can’t wait for the new season to kick into action.

“The transition wasn’t too bad because I’d been doing lots of running and played a few games at Newcastle, so it was really just an easy slot in when I came here and played against Birmingham, so it’s been easy fitting in.

“We’ve been working hard, we’re all really fired up for the first game of the season against MK Dons and I’m really looking forward to it, especially since I’ve previously played for them. Hopefully we’ll get our three points and get a good start to the season.”

The full-back believes Town could go on to have a good season and has tasked himself with winning ‘every game’ during his Shrewsbury stay, and it’s that hunger and desire that is sure to endear him to the Town faithful.

“I’m wanting to win every game when I’m here and playing, so my target is to win every game and get three points on the table every game to get us right up there.

“I think we’ve got a great chance of doing well. From the performance we gave against Birmingham the first game I was here, we played really well that day and it just shows the full potential of the team and what we can do when we really push ourselves and focus, so if we can do that then we’ve got a really good chance of doing well in this league.”
