Newly-formed side play opening friendly on Sunday

Newly-formed Shrewsbury Town Ladies play their first match on Sunday when they take on Telford-based West Mercia Reserves in a friendly at Shrewsbury Sports Village (2pm).

Manager Sean Evans said he was looking forward to seeing his side in action for the first time as they plan ahead for life in the Shropshire Women's County League.

"We're all really looking forward to the game," he said. "Training has gone very well over the last couple of months and the start of the league season is eagerly awaited.

"We've got a squad of 18 players already signed on including Penny Owen, the captain, who played for so many years for the old Shrewsbury Town women's team.

"Her experience will be invaluable and I'm pleased to have someone of her calibre on board to help with the development of the younger players."

Sean added he was hoping to arrange more friendlies ahead of the league season starting early next month.

"Any support we get at Sunday's game will be gratefully received," said Sean. "It should be a good occasion."
