Town set to land Villa striker on loan

Premiership striker set to come in

Shrewsbury Town are set to bring in highly rated Aston Villa striker Graham Burke on loan until January.

Paperwork is still to be finalised between the clubs but Graham Turner has reached agreement with Villa boss Paul Lambert to add Republic of Ireland under-21 international Burke to his squad.

Burke made his first team debut for Villa as a substitute in a League Cup win over Tranmere Rovers last season.

"He's a very good footballer," said the Town manager. "He can play off a striker or he can play wide. He's been with Aston Villa's system and more often than not has played wide.

"But we've seen him play just off a striker and he's just a good footballer with a good perception of the game.

"He's somebody we've been after for two or three months but his involvement with the first team through pre-season has delayed his signing.

"He actually went to Germany with the first team squad and has played in some of their pre-season games so he should come in match fit and ready to go so will obviously come into the reckoning at Leyton Orient."

GT had hoped to land another striker ahead of the trip to Orient but the player in question has had a change of heart and opted to stay at his parent club.

"We had agreed on Tuesday for a player to come in on a half season loan," he added. "We followed it up yesterday with all the details of it but I spoke to the player this morning and he's decided it's not in his best interests to come out to play.

"Supporters would have known him well so we're disappointed with that one."
