5-4 win over West Mercia Reserves

Shrewsbury Town Ladies enjoyed a winning start as they beat Telford-based West Mercia Reserves 5-4 in an exciting friendly.

Manager Sean Evans was delighted with the efforts of his side who were pleased to kick off on a winning note after only starting training in June.

The Shrewsbury goals came from Grace Bithell, who grabbed a fine hat-trick, while skipper Penny Owen, from the penalty spot, and right back Jess Hicks were also on target at the Shrewsbury Sports Village.

"It was a great start," said boss Evans. "The performance was everything I could have asked for against a tough team with a number of higher division players.

"What really pleased me was the fact we gelled very quickly as a team and played some good football.

"It's encouraging for the future and we were also pleased to see so many people at the game supporting us which made a big difference.

"We are now looking forward to the start of our league season."
