GT eyes Christmas progress

24 December 2013

The gaffer talks us through his thoughts ahead of the Boxing Day meet with Tranmere

Graham Turner wants his Shrewsbury Town team to make the most of back-to-back home games this week to make progress up the League One table.

Town host Tranmere Rovers on Boxing Day and then Preston North End on Sunday (both 3pm kick offs) before heading to Oldham Athletic on New Year's Day.

Three games in such a short space of time offers all clubs the incentive to pick up plenty of points and that's the aim for Shrewsbury.

"It changes dramatically over Christmas and the new year if you can string a few wins together," said the Greenhous Meadow manager. "We can climb that table and that has to be the aim."

Town may have tasted defeat in their last two home matches against Oldham and Walsall, but GT believes his team are capable of better results against both Tranmere and Preston.

He said: "The message to the players is we're the home team, we can win at home, we've done that, we've proved that.

"We've performed against some very good sides here and that's what we've got to continue now."

Tranmere are currently below Town in the League One table and GT is aware the Prenton Park club have some useful players, among them former Shrewsbury striker Ryan Lowe who has scored 14 goals this season.

He added: "There's a lot of experience in the side. Our supporters will know Ryan Lowe who's got amongst the goals this season. I think his record's tremendous at the moment.

"They've got people like Jason Koumas in midfield who's been around a little bit, James Wallace had a spell on loan here and is back from a long injury, Andy Robinson, people like that.

"But the manner in which we play is the most important thing. I think we can be more than a match for anybody when we perform well and that's what we've got to do."
