Skipper salutes his sides performance

By Matt Johnson

Captain Matt Richards saluted a resolute performance after Town recovered from an early setback to beat Stevenage 2-1 in front of a home crowd at the Greenhous Meadow.

After a slow start, the Town stalwart praised a masterful display of passing football that eventually proved dividends in the form of Marvin Morgan’s winner just four minutes from time.

“It was a great performance,” said Richards. “I thought we started off a little bit slow and let them have a little bit too much time on the ball, but after the first 15 minutes or so we got the ball down, passed it well, created a lot of chances and thoroughly deserved the result.

“We’ve got that spirit at the moment. We’re on a very good run, playing very well and picking up a lot of points which is important after the bad period we went through. Going a goal down so early was disappointing, but we showed spirit and character and thoroughly deserved the two goals if not more.”

Town have been on the wrong end of a number of late result-changing goals this season, and Richards revealed that the dressing room was rocking after creating some late drama of their own.

“We’ve been unfortunate at times, conceded a few very late goals that have cost us a few points and so it’s nice to grab the goal so late on.

“We’re taking each game as it comes but we’re looking upwards instead of below us now, which is a good thing.”

With Doncaster making the trip to the Meadow as soon as Tuesday, confidence is high in the camp as Richards stresses that the focus is on keeping the momentum rolling against a side that’s battling for automatic promotion.

“We just have to keep on going like we have been. We’ve been putting in some good performances and passing it well. Doncaster are a good passing team, but I think on the day we can beat anyone.

“They’re going to want to come here and turn us over, so it’s going to be a tough game, but because of the way we’re playing at the moment and the spirit we’ve got in the team, I don’t see why we can’t get another victory.”
