Loan update on Gayle and Gornell

8 January 2013

GT on the loan situation

Graham Turner expects the futures of loan duo Cameron Gayle and Terry Gornell to become clearer later this week.

He is keen to extend versatile defender Gayle's loan spell from West Bromwich Albion while he's waiting to hear from Rochdale what their intentions are with Gornell who has spent the last two months on loan at Spotland.

Talking about Gayle staying at Shrewsbury for longer, GT said: "We hope it will be concluded towards the end of the week. He's gone back to West Brom at the moment and will play in their reserve side against Arsenal tomorrow.

"We hope to conclude everything on Tuesday that's he's back with us on a youth loan so there's cover in different positions.

"Cameron can play anywhere across the back four so there's cover there, there's cover right across midfield but obviously we're short up front and that will be the next target.

"We've not concluded anything with West Brom yet. It could be just for another month but he's played at right back and left back.

"Certainly left back is not his best position but he's capable of filling in there and he's a very good defender. For a young player his positional play is good and in one v ones as a full back you need to deal with them and he does that extremely well."

As for Gornell, who has scored five goals in his two months on loan at Rochdale, GT is waiting to see what the League Two club would like to do next.

"I've had discussions with Rochdale but we're no further forward on that one," he said. "His loan finished on Saturday and there is a chance he will go there and stay longer at Rochdale. There's a chance he will be back with us on Thursday. I don't know Rochdale's intentions right at this point."

The manager added he had not felt the need to activate the recall clause in Gornell's second month on loan with Rochdale as he had been pleased with the strikers he has available.

He said: "It obviously crosses your mind but with Marvin and Luke showing a lot of energy up front and Tom Bradshaw looking better at the moment I didn't feel the need to call Terry back so we'll see what transpires over the next few days with him."
