Reserves hit the road

Reserves travel to Bury for latest Central League game

Ryan Doble makes his return from a hand injury when Shrewsbury Town reserves take on Bury in the Central League at Radcliffe Borough FC this afternoon (1pm).

Doble, the former Southampton striker, has not played since suffering the injury in training just before Christmas but will line up against the Shakers' second string.

Luke Summerfield and Paul Parry are among the experienced players in action while Connor Goldson will slot in at the heart of the back four.

"The game's probably come a week and a half too early for Mark Wright but some of the other lads obviously need games and we've also got a couple of trialists in," said manager Graham Turner.

"Connor Goldson will play in his favourite position as a central defender, Ryan Doble is back after his injury, Luke Summerfield can get 90 minutes in and we can also put Paul Parry in there and hope that he gets something out of the game in preparation for the match at Preston this weekend.

"It will be mostly pros but there's a couple of youngsters who have been doing exceptionally well. Sam Westray and Dominic Smith from the youth team will both play in the back four while Jack Gwilliams has been doing well so we'll see how he goes."

GT added he was just frustrated today's game was being played at Radcliffe Borough as opposed to Bury's Gigg Lane ground.

"The unfortunate part about it is that, although we're playing Bury, we're playing at Radcliffe Borough which I've got to say annoys me somewhat," he said.

"When we agreed to go back in this league we thought the conditions were that games would be played on the main grounds and there wouldn't be much travelling.

"At the moment it's in some cases training grounds and in some cases on smaller non-League grounds.

"In the case of travelling, it will be a nice trip later in the season to Hartlepool to play a reserve match.

"It hasn't worked out as well as we would have liked in this league but nonetheless it does provide us with games."
