New tennis partnership goes down well

Shrewsbury Town's Community Sports Trust's affiliation with The Shrewsbury Club to launch a new tennis partnership for local youngsters throughout the summer has quickly proved a big hit.

Organisers were delighted with the response to last weekend's free taster session with local youngsters gripped by tennis fever after the Wimbledon exploits of Andy Murray.

They now hope more boys and girls, aged between five and 11, will turn up at the Power League next to the Greenhous Meadow for the 10-week course which starts on Saturday morning between 11.15am  and 12.15pm.

"We had over 40 children turn up for the free taster session," said  Town community officer Lee Pugh. "The weather was fantastic and so were the kids.

"The course will now run for 10 weeks throughout the summer so come and join us."

Youngsters will be split into three groups, for ages five to eight, eight and nine, and nine to 11.

Each session will cost £6 with a special rate of £40 available for youngsters booked to attend all 10 sessions.

"This is a great introduction to the game of tennis and there is also the chance to play in an end of course tournament at The Shrewsbury Club, a centre of tennis excellence,” added Lee.

"Sessions will take place outside on the astro at the Power League which is a great surface to develop your game - and all equipment will be provided.

"This course will be great for learning how to work with other children, improving their own skill level and basic competition.

"The children will have fun through learning lots about the game of tennis. Each session will be structured with the focus on an area of play, for example learning to serve, rally or score. "

The tenth and final session will take place on the outdoor courts at The Shrewsbury Club on Sundorne Road with all parents invited to watch Tournament Day.

Each family will be presented with a FREE guest pass and given a tour of the fantastic facilities.
