A good early move saw Tom Swain fire Shrewsbury in front and he quickly repeated the trick after a good team move.
Shrewsbury then moved 3-0 ahead when Adam Müller blasted home a free kick before Harry Warren drove in a shot off the bar.
Peterborough clawed a goal back just before the break and scored twice again in the second half but Shrewsbury were in no mood to be denied their first win of the season.
Shrewsbury's man of the match was Charlie Warren.
