“It’s a fantastic venue”

19 November 2013

England U21 manager Gareth Southgate gives Shrewsbury Town a glowing reference

England Under 21 manager Gareth Southgate paid tribute to Shrewsbury Town FC, and the thousands of supporters in attendance, as his side set a new all-time England U21 record score line in the 9-0 victory over San Marino at Greenhous Meadow.

Supporters were treated to a host of goals from Michael Keane, Raheem Sterling (2), Danny Ings (2), James Ward-Prowse, Tom Ince, Carl Jenkinson and Will Hughes as the young England team romped to victory in front of a 9,264 strong crowd.

“It’s a fantastic venue,” said Southgate.

“It’s been great to see such enthusiasm towards hosting us, and to get virtually the full house that we did, and hopefully we’ve repaid that by the style of the performance.

“For any player, when you go to a ground and it’s close to full, and the supporters are as behind the team as the crowd here were, that gives them a lift. You get a higher level of performance when you get an attendance like that.

“We’ve been delighted to be here and we’re very grateful for everybody’s help. We’ve been looked after really well and we’ve been delighted with the way everything has gone.”

Snap up your tickets here for the next fixture at Greenhous Meadow, this Saturday’s visit of Notts County, 3pm k/o.
