Scholar Decisions Made

4 April 2014

The decision on contract offers for the second year scholars has been taken

It’s that time of the year when the decisions are made on whether or not the second year scholars in the youth team will be offered professional contracts by the club.

It was announced a few weeks back that Dom Smith, Callum Burton and Harry Lewis had all accepted professional contracts with Town and that was a big boost for the youth set-up.

The decision on the remaining second years has been taken by Mike Jackson and his coaches with input from the coaches in the clubs Academy.  It’s bad news for George Carpenter, Jack Richards, Scott Ryan, Matt Jones, Dave Easthope and Sam Molyneux who haven’t been offered pro deals.

It was the first time that manager Mike Jackson has had to make the decisions on the youngster’s future and it wasn’t an easy task:”I’ve spoken to the lads about the decisions and it’s the first time I’ve had to do it.

“It’s not a nice thing to do when you have to tell a young lad that he’s not going to be offered anything.

“You see examples of people bouncing back after not being offered anything, if it’s down to ability then it’s hard to change but if it’s down to attitude or application then you can change that.”

Town’s Academy manager Steve Reece has worked with the lads for a number of years and added:”It’s been a pleasure to work with all the lads and I would like to wish them well for the future”, a sentiment echoed by everyone at Shrewsbury Town Football Club.
